David Barksdale was one of the founding members. He died young, so they started using the Star of David to honor him.

In Chicago, at some points the different gangs aligned under two different cars. People and Folk

========
Gangs aligned with the Black P. Stone Nation (later known as the El Rukns) came under the umbrella
of the People Nation and included the Latin Kings, Vice Lords, Latin Counts, and Spanish Lords.

The sets for the Folk Nation included the Black Gangster Disciples, Black Disciples, Cobras, Latin Disciples, and Simon City Royals.

Gangs allied with the People Nation wore the five-pointed star in their gang regalia while gang identifiers were presented on their left side. Gang identifiers can be a baseball cap tilted to the left side, a
tattoo on the left arm, or a left pants leg rolled up.

In contrast, the Folk Nation sets exhibit the six-pointed star and are “right dressers.”

Both alliances have strict rules of conduct.

=====
I think the choice of the symbols are reactions to whichever was selected first by the rival car.

*Taken from a book I read about the history of gangs in Chicago, since before Capone.
