Honest question. Didn't the concept start because Tanahashi wanted to work in AEW and then Tony Khan just ran with it?

When he says forbidden door, what do people think TK is referring to nowadays? Do they now expect the FD to be something even more "forbidden" or something? :heh: at the end of the day is a marketing/promoting tool Khan uses to hype up shyt but I see fans losing their minds every time the concept is mentioned.

Yes you are correct. Tanahashi had a match with Jericho at the Tokyo Dome two years ago and during the build up he kept mentioning the forbidden door because NJPW wasn’t acknowledge AEW at first.

Now it’s evolved into any time someone crosses over from another promotion. Tony started running with it when he was doing those promos on impact where he threw shots at Nick Khan when WWE was talking to New Japan.

Its kinda like "strong style" where its a marketing ploy but not a real thing. Harold Meij left a while ago now so, things havent been "forbidden" since then.

Sounds like Tony owes Tanahashi some royalties.

As a lifelong wrestling fan i have never ever ever ever heard the term until TK made it a thing

He also owns the trademarks and rights to the term "Forbidden Door" which is why he uses it so much. Also should just stick to using that term to talk about wrestlers from other promotions coming in or AEW wrestlers showing up elsewhere.

There are fans that are too young to remember WWE/WWF working with other promotions. So AEW plays up on the "WWE never works acknowledges other promotions" thing to those fans. Even though a lot of us can remember WWF working with Japanese and Mexican feds. Had a whole ass ECW invasion. And at one point in the 90s I think Jarrett was defending some random bum ass NWA title in WWF.

That’s true but post-WCW & ECW purchase, WWE has refused to work with or acknowledge other major wrestling promotions, this has been going on for 21 years, so there’s a whole new generation (maybe 2) of wrestling fans that all they know is WWE acting like they’re the only wrestling company in the world.
