So I'm watching thst Yellowjacket series and I'm on episode 9. And I automatically thought " Well, next week must be the series finale". But I'm trying to think how did we get to this point. Who started this trend.

Game of Thrones is the first show I recall.

10-12 is the sweet spot. The showrunners couldn't write, but that last season would be remembered more favorably if they kept 10 episodes like every other fukking season. 4 more episodes to flesh shyt out.

Much better than 24+ eps( or 13).. shyt sometimes 8 is even better than 10
I’m so glad The Good Place had 13 eps per season, especially airing on national television. I was convinced it would have an 18+ count like the usual shows.

Some are network, some are cable. Network has commercials, cable doesn't. Seasons are more with networks and they have a certain amount of episodes and need to hit certain amount of minutes for each episode. Something I watched recently on cable, one episode was 35 minutes, next one was over an hour, all over the place. You can't do that with network television. Some cable shows drop all the episodes at once, some 1 episode a week, some twice a week (Station Eleven does this), can't do that with network television. Different animals.

Probably early HBO series started this.
