Need to revamp the educational system entirely:

-Throw away the focus on cursive writing and teach children how to type and user a computer/touchscreen properly from an early age.

-Start teaching programming to ALL in Elementary. Just basic syntax, nothing crazy. Increases in difficulty as they move up. Throw the Home Ec and Wood Shop classes in the bushes.

-Make a mandatory Internet Privacy/ Rights class in Middle School. Teach kids about scams, phishing, how to keep private data private, the dangers of publicizing information and so on.

-Stop forcing kids to memorize formulas and let them use a tablet or phone to look up formulas. Make the problems harder and push them to use critical thinking.

- Teach kids how to look up their Representative government officials, how to contact them using the internet, how to see voting records, etc.

Any other ideas to add?

I think we need more wood shop type classes. Teach people to solve problems in building physical structures, not just virtual structures. Make them understand physics and materials and textiles and spatial reasoning. Hands on problem solving with legos and robotics and all that, which can combine programming and physical things

I had to learn to do this when I helped a family friend clean out and repair houses a couple of summers ago, and I was shocked at how useful some of that stuff has been for me.

Also, in addition to @zerozero's point about spatial reasoning: It's not just about how to use it in a physical, real context. Learning spatial reasoning in that real sense can also deeply inform you on the nature of virtual, constructed and metaphysical spaces as well. Both influence each other in multiple and greatly varied ways (a virtual space, influential on the world or merely imagined, is almost always mapped on either an actual real space or an image of a real space, if that makes sense).

my lil cuz is 2 and she knows her way around a laptop through watching her mother. her only obstacle is literacy. I don't think those classes are really necessary, just exposure :yeshrug:

some folks respond better to working with they're hands as opposed to reading/writing. i know a couple of hopeless idiots who are happy and have jobs doing shyt they started in woodshop. there's nothing like making something with you barehands.

instruction in information searching, including boolean operators and all that. there are people my age that cant find the info they need when searching for research and articles :snoop:

Computer basics: Should teach what the basic parts of a computer are and how an OS works. Programming should come later, that's for people with a specific interest. But at the very least you should know about the physical components of a computer and operating system.

teach the children?

who? we got adults who think using the atm is black magic

but I get your point, just saying we don't have a workforce able to do it on a large scale

So true...i used to work in an inner city school district and I was part of the tech crew that set up the network and rolled out the computers to all of the schools. We even did little tutorials with the teachers just in case some of them were unfamiliar with computers.
So a month after the entire district was set up I had to go around replacing any old monitors with flatscreens and I walk into this classroom where the teacher had taken all the computers and locked them in her supply closet and very proudly proclaimed that she never lets the kids touch the computers because all they would do is "mess them up". :snoop:

Yeah, I don't see a need to teach all kids programming, if anything that's a good elective.

But I agree with making sure kids are computer literate. Something like typing and safely using the Internet would be cool. I didn't really learn how to type myself until middle school. Honestly though, most kids ARE fairly computer literate these days...it's older folks that are :snoop: .

What I REALLY think we should be teaching kids more about is personal finance, especially kids in the hood. Learning about managing their money, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, credit, interest rates, how to buy a house/car, etc. would be REALLY beneficial for high schoolers IMO.

I wish I'd learned more about that rather than economics in high school...as a college student (and to a certain extent now) I was kind of clueless about managing my money and still don't know how to do much besides let it sit in my savings account. And I have NO clue on how to even get started with stocks, though I want to learn one of these days. :snoop:

Some type of compulsory service for one year/few months - whether military/ROTC or americorps/peace corps type community service>>>Whatever you listed imo.

But some people would have a fit. Big boogieman government and all.

Programming is ALL logic and reasoning, sprinkled with math/number theory.

Yup. Some countries around the world have already begun to do this.

For sure, personal finance is extremely important. A true finance class is needed. A true Goverment class is needed, where they teach the kids their rights and teach them local, state and federal law/political process.

I don't agree with you friend. Can you list reasons why this would be beneficial?

some of you are assuming that the powers that be even want the masses educated to the levels you're talking about... there's a reason our public schools are in the shape they are in...

You have a point because the private schools have already begun implementing some of what I have said.
