Yes, I know, forget the Grammys. I get it. At the same time, last year some predicted Mike would win. Same with the goat Nas. So who do think it will be this year? Common, the Clipse. Obviously if Kendrick drops, that will change everything.

Not like us is a lock if it’s submitted. There’s only 60 days or so left in the eligibility window so if somebody like Dot doesn’t drop an album there may be a chance for a lesser celebrated artist to come in and clean up like Killer Mike did last year.

Best Rap Album , provided Kendrick doesn’t drop by August 30th (which I doubt) then we’re looking at an eclectic lineup that includes Common & Pete Rock, 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion, Metro Boomin & Future, and possibly Nicki Minaj. Eminem won’t submit as he’s stated he’s finished with the Grammys. Kanye West and his Vultures album won’t be nominated and artists like Schoolboy Q and Vince Staples routinely fall through the cracks. With the way the Best Rap Album category has leaned more towards critical acclaim than sales the last few years I could see Common & Pete Rock winning Best Rap Album or them throwing another trophy Megan’s way.

It’ll be interesting who amongst the big two (Kendrick and Cole) drop albums within the eligibility period, or if both do. Cole has never won Best Rap Album despite 3 nominations and might have enough of an “overdue” factor to win this go round but if Kendrick drops its a wrap for any and everyone. The only question would be how competitive he’d be in the general category.
