If I listen to my beats at a VERY low volume... so I can't quite hear what's going on sonically, I find my imagination will sometimes fill in the blanks

I do that too... only when Im completely stuck thoughwhenever i get stuck and don't know what i need to add or change then i just let the skeleton rock on a loop while i play records on top of it til something sounds like it could work.
most of my routine is just spent logging samples in my brain so when i have time to make a beat i can sit down and know exactly what records to grab and where to drop the needle. only way i can avoid beat block.
I understand oo too wellI go outside and try to find emotions (good or bad emotions) cos music is emotion and sometimes we are empty. that's my technique, and it´s weird.
When i finish a beat I turn the volume real loud and go outside and listen to how it sounds..
Yoooi found myself doing that shyt to.
My brother got mad at me like "Why you turn up the volume so loud in the car while you not even sitting inside the car?"
I said i wanted to hear how it would sound if people passing heard it.
Yooo
