The Weave Loan Store has opened in Detroit, Michigan with the slogan, “Now You can Afford to be Beautiful” to much fanfare, concern and disgust in the black community. One can get rid of their “ugly” natural hair in exchange for the “beautiful”, long weave of another persons hair, as the slogan implies.
The hair weave industry in America is booming, particularly in the black community. Women are now spending over a billion dollars annually on weaves and the some estimates have the number much higher than that and rising in the near future.
This seems to be because we have cultivated a culture where the black women’s hair isn’t good enough to stand on its own. We have adapted, as a culture and community, the western, white ideals of beauty and want our women to look like this image as much as possible. This includes having long, straight hair of various colors.
Weave is a great way for black women to achieve this desired look and there are a lot of serious businesses surrounding the industry. Unfortunately, the rising cost of hair weave can set a person back $400, $500 even $1,000 or more, but black women are willing to pay for it if they can afford it.
Therefore, it only seems natural in American capitalism that a lender would step in and fill the demand for money needed to get a new weave. With so many people willing to finance the things they want instead of saving for it, lending on hair weave seems to be poised to explode as the next big sector in financial lending.
However, many people in the black community have a problem with weave loans. Predatory lending practices already plague the black community when it comes to real estate, automobiles, store credit, payday loan stores and more. Now there is another entity in the marketplace looking to sink their financial teeth into the black community, weave loans?
