We Happy Few: The Basics

ptmvuyiqgubdvpmygbfo.gif

What is it? We Happy Few, a first-person survival game where you play as a stranger in the unnaturally happy town of Wellington Wells.
Who is making it? Compulsion Games, the folks who made shadow-centric puzzle-platformer Contrast.

Here's a trailer...

Did we play it? Yes at PAX East 2015. Here's a video with designer/creator Guillaume Provost that shows off the first few minutes of the game.

Anything stand out about it? Many popular games in the survival genre start you off naked. No clothes, no house, no food... that's the norm. We Happy Few is different. You start off dressed to the nines in fine, 1960s mod-fashion attire and have an abandoned underground shelter as an initial base. But to get what you really need to subsist over a multi-day span, you're going to need to break into other people's houses and steal things. Those are big no-nos in Wellington Wells and people who don't conform get beat to death..
Got a fun detail? Provost says that We Happy Few draws inspiration from famous dystopian novels Brave New World and 1984 among other sources.

Compulsion Games will launch a Kickstarter campaign for its February-announced We Happy Few on June 4, the developer announced.
“The entire team is currently working hard preparing the Kickstarter, and we are both very excited and nervous about it,” the studio said in its latest newsletter. “We received a lot of great feedback and ideas, and we have worked a number of them into our campaign. We also have a couple of surprises that we hope you’ll like… so stayed tuned.”
If you missed it, we last heard from We Happy Few at PAX East in March. A nice batch of screenshots also came out of it.

Compulsion's Psychedelic Dystopian Survival Game Hits Kickstarter

by Tim Turi on June 04, 2015 at 06:55 PM

wehappyfew-624-610.jpg

Earlier this year developer Compulsion Games, the team behind Contrast, announced We Happy Few, a new title about drugged-up English citizens living a life of blissful denial in the 1960s. We got a chance to play the first-person survival game shortly after the announcement, and were left to wait for more details. Today, the Canada-based Compulsion announced that We Happy Few is actually being funded via Kickstarter, with a goal of roughly $200,000 (250,000 CAD)
The announcement trailer below sets the tone of false, prescription-based optimism in an entertainingly bizarre chat between the in-universe talk show host Jack and creative director Guillaume Provost. He explains how players will control a "downer" who refuses to take his happy pills, trying to fit in with the hopped-up Wellies while foraging for food and supplies. Compulsion expects players to die a lot in their quest to escape the town, so proceedurally generated layouts will greet players each time they give it another go.

More about We Happy Few,

We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of slightly terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful delusion. Set in a drug-fuelled, retro-futuristic city in an alternative history 1964 England, you’ll have to blend in with its other citizens, who don’t take kindly to people who don’t abide by their not-so-normal rules.

Main Features

  • A procedurally generated world: Each time you die or beat the game, your next adventure through Wellington Wells will be different. Forget about relying on the city’s layout to escape!
  • A sophisticated suspicion system: The inhabitants of Wellington Wells expect you to behave in very specific ways—if they suspect you’re not taking your Joy, they’ll quickly identify you as a Downer.
  • Frenzied combat: Downers aren’t very popular in Wellington Wells. In fact, Wellies tend to get a bit violent whenever one walks by.
  • Twisted survival mechanics: In this urban setting, avoiding the Wellies’ fury often means hiding in plain sight.
  • An elaborate crafting system: Salvage supplies and Joy-tainted food to stay alive, but be careful not to overdose!
Below is a video showing off 15 minutes of Pre-Alpha Gameplay.
