Yesterday, I was talking to my nephew about it. He's 19, no job, not in college yet but, thinks he's gonna go pro.

Me: I know you nice, just have a backup plan :ld:
Me: Lot of nikkas thought they was gonna make it & ended up :to:
Nephew: That aint gonna be me though :obama:
Me: There's 400 nikkas in the NBA. 64 draft slots every year & 3 million black kids that want them :aicmon:
Nephew: They not all willing to work as hard as me though :obama:
Me: I just don't want you ending up like Boobie Miles? :beli:
Nephew: :wtf: is that?
Me: Exactly :aicmon:

I had a hoop dream once, then i realized I wasn't that good, and I had more lucrative options. most cats can't see that/or have those options that I have.

Alot of dudes don't learn until they hit that wall of reality hard af later in life.:snoop:

Thankfully I wasn't one of them, I was always nice at ball, but I knew by the time I reached 8th grade that i wasn't headed to the NBA by any stretch of the imagination.:sadcam:

Man I don't now what's up with some kids. I didn't even have a mentor like your nephew does with you and I still knew it was ridiculous to aim for sports or music with no backup. Yes following your dreams is important, but you also have to be aware of the odds.

What are the odds of making it as an entertainer Vs the millions of white coller jobs available? I'm afraid kids often just aren't honest with themselves or their ability.

A dream can easily turn to a nightmare when you're in your mid to late-20s with no options in life.

How many of us see the former league prospects looking :flabbynsick: working in a factory and just walking in around with a broken spirit?

I certainly do.

It's definitely tougher to make the NBA than the NFL.

Rosters are about a fourth of an NFL roster, and like the OP said, 64 drafts slots per yr wit millions thinkin they that nice.

it doesn't really :snoop:

that's why i told him to really start thinking about what else he wants to do. he's planning on going the JUCO route next year.

All he needs is to play a NBA D league scrub, and when he was washed up 50-0, then he would listen to you.

that may not work...

there are probably 1000's of pro level talent athletes running around waiting for their big break (all whilst working @ footlocker, UPS, etc etc), there are other factors that allow people to slip through the cracks... so if his nephew is nice and puts up a good game against said d-league scrub it may not help. He needs to see someone who had the same dreams as him probably someone in their 30s still living with their parents and doing squat before he realizes he needs to put his energy elsewhere.
