Race has nothing to do with the message of the film. In fact, the Black bank protester was a mirror image of him.

In case you can't read his lips, the young brother is saying "Don't forget me." Then the main character nods.
Exactly. Both frustrated with society and on the verge of snapping. They take action themselves because they refuse to change with the times...and take no responsibility on their part.

The brother is probably divorced too. "She doesn't understand me either"- types

I thought about how cats can possibly relate to it and not look at it from a "race" angle. There were racial elements, but there was also the part of just wanting to spend time with his child that I'm sure alot of guys that have been divorced or lost custody of their kids can probably relate to.
