First season is great, second is good, third is average with some good moments.
There was no real definitive ending because they were thinking they could come back, with her as an FBI agent or something, but it's not a huge cliffhanger or anything.

How bad is the third series? Is it watch able or just garbage? If I watch the first series I have to watch all three and I don't want to do that if the third series is out and out awful.

It's watchable for sure, the major difference is that season 1 and 2 have a story arc/mystery that goes throughout the season. Number three has a big story as well but it wraps a lot sooner and some of the other eps flounder a little bit. I loved the show so I enjoyed a fair bit of number three, most people rated it lower. Everyone loved season one.
Third season of VM is comparable to the 5th season of The Wire. Not at the level of the prior seasons but definitely watchable with some really good stuff sprinkled in.

That's you. You're gonna eat real good off all those shows. "Buffy" fell off after Season 5, but 1-5 is some of the best TV...."Angel" is awesome 1-5, "X-Files" is GOAT status season 1-6 and 7,8,9 range from good to kinda bad.
I consider "Angel" season 4 one of the best seasons of TV ever, any show, genre, whatever.

There's a character on "Buffy" that later crosses over to "Angel" named Wesley Pryce. I consider his character arc one of the greatest in TV history, and I'd say his journey from nerdy loser to bad ass is a precursor to Walter White in "Breaking Bad".

Cool. I'm going into Season 6 of Buffy, into season 2 of X-Files and midway through season 1 of Angel.
Problem is I've seen all of the top class programmes like The Wire, Sopranos, Battlestar, Deadwood etc so this stuff is a little patchy in comparison. Still very entertaining though.

Honestly I'd put the best seasons of "X-Files" and season 4 of "Angel" right there with any of those shows. Not better than, maybe not on the same level, but close. The only bad thing is "X-Files" falls off something fierce after season 6.
