Was anyone else in the mainstream rapping like this when this song came out? I know this song was not a single, but was any other mainstream artist rapping this style at the time?

P..S.- I know that he gets some hate on his board, but this was some good sh!t, meng.

I was around eighth grade when Em really popped off. Especially with those first two albums and the features on Dre’s work, in real time, Em was unique and highly regarded on some rap shyt. A lot of his stuff didn’t age well, and of course once he caught on white people took it to another notch calling him the GOAT and whatnot, but he really was fire in this era.

Mainstream wise he was completely unique. There had been underground horrorcore rap that was popping for a while but Em was the first to crossover just saying wild shyt. When I heard My Name Is the first time I thought what the hell is this trash. Then I heard it a few times more and it blew me away. When I heard the album I was playing that for anybody that would listen. I remember being on school trips playing it for a group of people.

Different subject matter and overall gimmick, but Canibus had similar mechanics i would say…within the same ballpark of rap styles …he got his mainstream push a year or so before Em’s…wonder how each would’ve turned out if roles were reversed, Bis came in under Dre and Em under Wyclef
