Meant to post in this thread yesterday.

Got 200+ hours in Wartales between 1.0 and Early Access, so I'm pretty confident saying this game is great, punishing, and the fact that it allows you to fail is the main thing that people will love and hate.

Another thing is that there isn't some key, main narrative in play here. You're a band of mercenaries, the world is a low fantasy medieval France, and everything is trying to kill you. If its not the wildlife, its bandits, a fukking plague, hunger, inquisitors, etc.

The combat is more Chimera Squad than XCom proper - its your turn/enemy turn for the each round and action economy generally favors the group with more numbers. You can't see exactly what the enemy is doing, but the game will tell you *which* enemy is going to take its turn. There's a lot of cool weapons based effects but the progression for each class is honestly fantastic with plenty extra stuff to unlock through challenges and upgrades.

I love the combat straight up. NGL though, they made it MUCH easier in 1.0. The game now scales heavily upward on the backend now. Early game is the learning curve but you'll quickly realize the difference equipment and party comp makes as you go on. Enemy variety is slept on in this game too. Its very basic in the beginning of the game. Mid game/Level 5 and on? You'll be getting hit with funky get-over-here moves, enemies that shyt poison when they get touched, ghost animals, and the french equivalent of TLOU clickers lol....

The world itself is great. There's no real 'good' guys. Plenty of bad guys and morally ambiguous actors all around. It comes out in the quest interactions as well as.... well, you can steal all you want as long as you give jails a steady supply of criminals to balance it all out :mjlol: each region has its own 'story' so to speak too.

The crafting/camp stuff is great but honestly its too much to explain at length. Steam deck isn't optimized because controller support is still in progress.

I could talk about the ins and outs of this game all day. But tl;dr - I highly recommend this for any turn based tactics fan.

Gave this a try on gamepass and it's actually amazing.

Can't believe this hasn't been getting more buzz.
