Who Bought Your Politician? Check With Our Embeddable Widget | Threat Level | WIRED
I thought this was very interesting.
One of the main issues we have in the US is that politicians can be bought and sold by lobbyists. Money for campaigns which is integral to win an election mean loyalty and favors for whichever entity owns that particular politician. Those favors might come in the form of favorable legislature or even an entire platform in some cases. In the end that politician no longer really works for the people who elected them but instead for the entity who financed their campaign and many times whatever the owner wants is in conflict with what the people want. Some of tho money is hidden through "private donations" but still it is interesting to see the correlation between campaign contributions and whether the politician was elected or not. I learned about this in school and in later on college but never really fully understood how deep the rabbit hole went. This website tracked campaign contributions for the house and senate in 2012 and you should take a look. When you realize that Exxon-Mobil, GE and Johnson&Johnson own our congress, it makes for a rough day.
