Saw this tonight, a supposedly 'lost' film from the director of 'First Blood', and 'Weekend at Bernies', (oddly enough), from 1971, about the Australian outback, it was a failure, and panned by Australian audiences, for it's portrayal of the brutal nature of Australia's outback backwater towns. A school teacher, stranded in a small town, is seduced, or (willingly goes) into an ugly, stark, alcoholic world of endless beers and shots, oppressive masculinity, kangaroo hunts...and discovers the nature of poverty and desperation, harsh sexuality, in a place at the end of the earth, where 'civilized' societal conventions are nonexistent.
A pretty fukking horrifying movie, the content and the way it's shot, and the music makes it play like a horror movie, which it is, the hunting scenes are graphic and disturbing. I was uncomfortable, tense, and the 'pat on the back' beer in hand way of the characters was ominous and intimidating. I might freak out if anyone asks me if I want a beer, or to 'have a drink mate'.
