It has been reported that Vice President of writing at Rockstar Games, Michael Unsworth, has left the company after 16 years. Unsworth is best known for writing on both entries in the Red Dead Redemption series, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grant Theft Auto 5, L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3.

This comes after Unsworth’s LinkedIn profile was updated to show he had left the company sometime this year. Alongside his reported departure from Rockstar Games, his LinkedIn profile has also seemingly been updated to refer to his work at the company in the past tense.

“Mike is an accomplished writer who spent over 16 years working for Rockstar Games as a creative lead on some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful video game franchises of all time, most notably Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption”. It continues, “He has a deep understanding of interactive storytelling, character development and open-world game design and extensive experience building and managing creative teams”.

Unworth’s departure has not yet been confirmed by Rockstar Games, and the reasons for his apparent departure is unknown. However, this news comes after other key Rockstar figureheads like co-founder Dan Houser and writer Lazlow Jones left the company in 2020 to join new projects.

While some fans are worried what Unworth’s reported departure will mean for the yet-to-be-released Grand Theft Auto 6, it’s more than likely we’ll still see Unworth’s work throughout the next entry in the series, given previous reports have suggested Grand Theft Auto 6 is well into development. However, it should be noted that much of this information should be taken with a grain of salt.

Alongside the above, as mentioned, Unworth’s departure has not been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games. Should this later be confirmed we’ll be sure to update this story. With GTA 6 hot on Rockstar fans’ minds, be sure to check out our GTA 6 release date prediction, rumours and what we know so far piece.

Lotta high-profile people left Rockstar. This is what happens when the publisher gets too involved, or your studio is outright bad (343i).

Kinda sucks Take Two strangled the IP that effectively that fast. Nuked any SP DLC, inflated all prices in GTA:O, and even took back old content to resell to subscribers. :francis:

GTA6 is either finna make them or break them.
Might just be the last thing that keeps them relevant because after that it might be a wrap for them.
GTA6 is some shyt that will be on this gen, next gen, and probably the gen after. So they got a solid 10yrs off of just GTA6... but after that yeah

They haven’t been the great R* ppl know in a long time.
Because these people took years off their lives making RDR2 because of crunch

On Oct. 14, New York magazine published a lengthy feature about the development and highly anticipated launch of Red Dead Redemption 2. In it, Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser described the workload necessary to deliver such a richly detailed open world and video gaming experience. “We were working 100-hour weeks,” several times this year, Houser said. The story went on to tout the 300,000 animations, 500,000 lines of dialogue and voluminous codebase in the game.

Reaction within the gaming community was swift and intense. Working conditions in games development, particularly long hours and expectations of overtime, have been a mainstream topic in the subject going back to 2004. Though Houser later gave a statement saying he intended his remarks to reflect RDR2’s senior writing team’s workload within a limited timetable, the fuse on this controversy had been lit.

When you wanna be great at anything sacrifices have to be made unfortunately

Red Dead Redemption, RDR 2 and GTA resonates me unlike any other games I ever played in my life

When you are the best it’s hard to keep it going

Rockstar is the like the Patriots, 49ers and Steeler dynasties

Eh he was hit or miss. RDR 2 and la Noire was the only well written stories of the rockstar series. Not saying GTA 5 wasn't a great game. but the story was goofy imo
