Lennox Lewis could win, but he wouldnt.

The Brown Bomber would turn Lennox' lights out before the fight was over. Louis was a great inside fighter. Power in both hands, quick hands and accuracy, and was good at going to the body with powerful hooks. Also, he had the nerve to be a combination puncher:wow:

Uppercuts, hooks, jab...Louis could do it all and WOULD do it all against Lennox Lewis who with all that "jabbing from the outside" he liked to do, I believe Joe would adjust to it and slip inside and damage his body. Louis would be very susceptible to Lewis' jab though and that's what would be a key factor in the fight.

Crazy thing is for all his offense, he was a counter puncher first and was good defensively (better than Lennox), so I see Joe Louis winning this fight by a left hook off a feint and slip under Lewis jab.

Joe Louis, 2nd best Heavyweight ever:blessed:

I gotta go with Lennox...when he was right and doing what Manny told him to do by fighting behind his jab he was damn near unbeatable especially with a size differential like this one.

I'm gonna go with Lennox. My heart is telling me to take the Bomber but the problem is neither of these dudes always came in in tip top shape. I also feel like with his conditioning on point and pumping that jab out there, Lewis is hard to beat.

Whether Lennox decides to box or press the attack...he gets put to sleep here. I don't see LL being able to outbox Louis or successfully fighting an aggressive fight without walking into a counter right at some point like he did against McCall. Louis has the style & skillset to execute McCall's gameplan in his 1st fight with LL to an absolute tee...he would eat Lennox alive with that counter right over the top of that lazy ass pawing jab that LL like to throw.

The weird thing with Lewis in this tournament is really, how you'd determine which version of him fighting. In my opinion, prime Lennox was the one that people saw the least of, post-McCall and pre-Holyfield. In that time he dropped the recklessness from the early-90's, but hadn't lost all of the raw athleticism and become as tempered as he would during his run as the heavyweight kingpin which started in the Holyfield fight and went towards the end of his career. He actually faced and beat the stiffest run of competition of his career during this period, too. Joe's big advantages are nullified not by a measure of skill, but just by circumstance. In-fighting? Lennox just smothered the shyt out of in-fighters. His defense? Joe was glorious at slipping punches, but fighting a reflexsive fight is starting out on the wrong foot with him. Lennox was super okay with looking at a guy like :ld: and turning his workrate way down, just popping that jab out to score every once in a while, completely shutting down a guy looking to slip and counter window of opportunity.

The guys that gave Lennox problems were the ones that pre-empted him at his own game. Winning exchanged by setting up their offense and scoring on the outside, tying him up on the inside, rinse and repeat. With that 8-10in reach disadvantage, Joe Louis isn't that guy.

That's the thing though b, he can't replicate McCall's gameplan because he can't grow his arm another 8 inches. If I remember right McCall and Lewis' reach was identical, making McCall a prime candidate to sit right at the end of a pawing jab and still be able to come over the top of it. That's a whole 'nother step Louis has to take to do the same thing, and that changes the situation drastically.

You make a decent point. :ehh:

But the arm length is the only defeciency when compared to McCall...what about handspeed? timing? accuracy? All of which negate the reach deficit...And even with the reach "advantage" you think McCall can do a better job of setting up his offense behind the jab than Louis? :usure:

I seem to recall Mercer touching up Lennox more than anybody in his entire career....particularly with the jab. And he has practically the same reach as Joe Louis and is an inch shorter.

Do you think Mercer and/or McCall have a better jab than Louis? Faster hands? Better accuracy and timing? The ability to lure opponents into traps like Louis? The counter right which is Louis's bread-n-butter in particular..the same punch that did him in against McCall.

And Louis has never had a problem finding his way to opponents with long reaches.

BTW Louis would not be at a disadvantage on the inside against Lewis...Fighters around Lewis's size have tried to smother and bumrush and force their weight on him only to get broken down by Louis's short, crisp accurate punching at close range...Lewis got outfought for the most part in the inside exchanges against Holyfield in both fights....Holyfield is a great infighter...but Louis has a more deadlier arsenal at close range than Holy...LL would get ravaged on the inside against Louis...he wouldn't be able to guard against all those quick sneaky hooks & uppercuts.

Unfortunately style makes me pick Lennox. Regardless of how I feel about Lennox, he was an excellent boxer who knew how to use his reach to his advantage. I don't think (I don't believe I'm saying this), I don't think Bomber can overcome Lewis' movement when he's comfortable, when Lennox is comfortable, he's dangerous.

This is an interesting one...

Focused Lennox wins by UD, unfocused Lennox doesn't last 5 rounds...

So I am assuming prime in shape focused Lennox...

Small guys never faired well against Lennox and Joe would be giving up a lot size...That said Joe never struggled with bigger dudes, he destroyed Primo Carnera whose build was like Brock Lesnar...Primo wasn't really a boxer though, he was a circus sideshow type...Lennox is an ATG heavyweight boxer with an excellent jab...I think Joe would have a lot of trouble getting past that jab and close enough to Lennox to land anything significant...Joe's footwork was very slow and methodical, Lennox wasnt quick but he was swift footed...Its also worth noting styles make fights and they were both excellent boxer-punchers but the bigger man has the advantage here...
