While the nations eyes were glued to the presidential inauguration Monday, Virginia Senate Republicans stealthily passed legislation that would redraw Virginias Senate districts in favor of their party.
The 40-member Virginia Senate is split evenly between both parties: 20 Democrats and 20 Republicans. But one Democrat, Senator Henry Marsha big player in Virginias Civil Rights movement in the 60s and '70swas absent from Richmond because he was attending the inauguration.
The redistricting map still needs to be approved by the House, the governor and, because Virginia has a history of racial discrimination, would also need approval from the Department of Justice.
