In my browsing of the internet I've come across various Korg Triton/Trinity racks and keyboards, Ensoniq ASR-10s, Roland D-50s, at decent enough prices it wouldn't be a total loss if I bought them (plus Tax season is upon us)

I come to the Tunnel to ask you guys if there is really any room for vintage gear with their vintage sounds in 2017 in the world of DAWs and MIDI controllers which eclipse the capabilities of the older gear however those older pieces of equipment have sounds/"charm" to them that haven't been 100% duplicated in the new era

Thoughts?

100% go for it. I got a collection of vintage rack samplers and drum machines.

These things hold value so you are not completely out of luck if you have to sell. And even still I'd probably live on the street before I'd sell

yeah. in my opinion good ideas come from just sitting at the keyboard exploring sounds, rather than sitting in front of the loaded up work flow.

think of it like an artist sitting in front of a easel trying to force a work of art vs a great idea being sketched out on a napkin.

unless you have a dope keyboard with tons of good sounds like a triton or fantom, or have an actual piano in your house or a guitar where you can mindlessly play, then its good to have the gear so like i said you can just turn on the keyboard, the monitors and the rack and play the sounds, explore the sounds and if you come up with a good idea go from there. its not the same to me playing in fl or reason although you can explore the workflows as well and it is very good to do so.

You a musician right? :ld:

Im bout to buy a Nord Stage 2, and you can't even try to tell me some cheap ass software program can emulate electric keys and organ sounds the same way :mjlol:

I first starting recording on ADATS and analog 4 track recorders. Making beats on DR550 and SR16's, using any synthesizer I could get my hands on whether it was a Yamaha from radio shack or casio cz5000. Now aside from my guitars everything is in the box. Nothing beats the the real thing like vintage gear but as someone who had to load 5 or 6 floppies (literally 5 min to load one beat) up to play back one beat back in the day on my akai s20 I will gladly sacrifice some of that authenticity for the convenience of modern emulations. I can add a little grit from a bitcrusher to degrade or warm up the signal. Of course not the same but I will settle for in the ball park

I think it depends on the synth you trying to emulate

No vintage gear for me. The process to use it is too slow for me.
That new MPC X looks interesting though but think i'm sticking with Fruity Loops.
I remember back in the day going through the Sam Ash and GC ads thinking how much I wanted so much of that gear. Eventually ended up with a 2000XL, K Station and a Motif Rack and all kinds of small things here and there. Now, lol, dust collectors. Like you, the process is too slow and too much interferance noise with all the cabling. I'm sticking with Reason.

The core my gear can be considered vintage/semi vintage.

*Akai S3200XL with Magneto Optical drive (will probably sell and cop a MPC4000/8 outs tho)
*Roland XV5080 with Vintage Synth Card and sample library CDs
*DAW - Used an AW4416 but just purchased parts to build an Ensoniq Paris (what if I told you there was actually a DAW with the same DSP as the ASR/DP? :ohhh: That sound :wow:)

It's all about what works for you at the end of the day. I personally like limitations. :yeshrug:

Outer Heaven
Rack / outboard gear and microphones are absolutely worth it.
Plug ins are modeled to emulate classic analogue gear.
If you can get your hands on hardware go for it.
Far as triton I wouldn't say it's worth it since you can download most if not all of the triton sounds these days and use any midi controller. Same thing goes for drum kits.
