Why do they find this exciting?

Any peers celebrating this either are going to a) crash out themselves or b) are going to leave them behind if they do something with themselves

What are they hoping to accomplish long term? Do they not think ahead of the consequences?

Or are they not that different than a depressed person - they're just externalizing it rather than internalizing it?

Because they know they'll be out on the street in no time to do it again.

The penalty is a slap on the wrist which is why you're constantly seeing multiple repeat offenders.
