There was just an audit done in Ontario that revealed the school cafeterias were losing a lot of money because the children didn't want the "healthy selection" and they would just go to the convenience store an buy pizza...

To me this whole fuss about childhood obesity is just a a symptom of lazy parenting...

Children SHOULD NOT be given choices...You give them oatmeal, boiled eggs, fruits and a glass of water, and send them school (with no pocket money), and let them know all that BS fussing will not be tolerated, and they will be okay...

That's what my parents did with me...I always thought, "when I grow up, I will eat all the candy and junk that I could afford"...But I grew up, and I can't stand to eat anything that I didn't prepare myself, and when I crave food, it's always healthy home cooked meals...

Parents need to stop babying children...Make them responsible from an early age, non of that "he/she is only a child" BS...

All we get are poosies from that kind of parenting...

Did you check the vid? They ain't feeding them just oatmeal and boiled eggs... the meals are healthy, eaten slowly and socially. That's a good approach to good eating I think

(1) It costs the system money to run such programs...The French government is probably losing more money than they are making...The program is good but unnecessary...

(2) The original problem is LAZY/CONVENIENT parenting...This is the issue that needs to be addressed...I have friends who have children, and one problem I see in many cases, is parents giving young children options and parents not being assertive...

And because this problem is wide spread, it is VERY difficult for parents who want to be assertive, to be assertive, because they start threading that thin line between tough love and child abuse...

If every child knew that every other child was eating oatmeal and eggs for breakfast, and not some fancy processed lord knows what from a brightly coloured box, then we wouldn't need to be spending tax dollars fussing about what our children are eating...

My biggest fear about having children, is that the concept of the village is now gone in the Western World...How can you tell your child, that oatmeal and eggs is the best choice, when all his/her friends are being fed some over sweetened garbage...? If you have a naturally fussy child, then that's even worse...

Parenting is taking Ls left right center, and that's the source of most of our children's poor decisions...

Breh. The vast majority of adults out there are eating badly too. It's more than a problem of "laziness" like not shoveling your snow. Food and cooking is intertwined with a lot of social factors. As someone who has improved his nutrition a lot lately, I truly don't think someone external yelling at how I'm lazy would have impacted me to make positive changes the way a greater understanding of health, food, cooking, and following online health stuff has been useful to help me finally get the results I want from better eating. The impact of context, socialization etc is way underrated when people think about this. Like you say yourself, parents setting an example themselves is so significant. But neither parents nor kids will benefit from suddenly being "punished" with food they don't like eating. They won't stick to it.

So, we are on the same page...

My context is that, a recent audit in Ontario revealed that (A) school cafeterias were losing money because of healthy menus (B) children are just walking down the street to buy something from the convenient stores...

From this information, I concluded that this kinds are programs are not really that effective...

USA
That white British chef dude tried to make a difference. Last year, there was a reality show. The administration and staff of most schools were against changing to a healthy menu due to time, effort and money.

By the way, the people in France are becoming like Americans and ironically, because of the growth of American fast-food chain restaurants in France. They got an obesity epidemic on their hands. Thank you Colonel Sanders and your secret 11 herbs and spices.
