San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama will miss the remainder of the season with a blood clot in his right shoulder, the team announced Thursday.
“The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco,” the Spurs said in a statement.

Wembanyama, a 21-year-old center, is already considered one of the premier big men in the league today. He was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.6 blocks a game for San Antonio this season.
The Spurs are 23-29, 12th in the Western Conference.

Wembanyama, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, entered the NBA as arguably the greatest basketball prospect since LeBron James in 2003.
The Frenchman won NBA Rookie of the Year honors last season after averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks, 1.8 3-pointers and 1.2 steals a game. He was the first player with at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks and 100 made 3-pointers in a season.

It's basically a blood clot in the leg. It's serious because if the clot travels up to your lungs you could have a pulmonary embolism (which could be fatal).

I think they usually treat it with blood thinners, but yeah, probably not safe to play sports until it's treated. Pretty sure it's not a career ender tho.

You don’t treat a blood clot. Your body actually will break them down on its own. Blood thinners just prevent the clot from getting bigger/forming any more. It takes a long time to break up a blood clot. Thrombolytics or clot breakers are for people with ACUTE pulmonary embolism or stroke, only when very necessary bc they come with their own serious risks

Depends on the cause. If he has a genetic predisposition it could be a challenging to continue with his career. There are surgical options to catch clots after they form as well as treatment with blood thinners. but he’s still a young man and might not want these options.
Very concerning for such a young man to get DVTs though. Wish him the best.

He can get DVTs at his age due to his height, the long flights and the stress to his body. IVC filter might help but with all this jumping and running around, this will most likely retire him.
