Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said he cancelled his plan to take part in the UN General Assembly in New York to "protect my life" after purported threats on it.

I decided then and there to continue back to Caracas and drop the New York trip to protect a key goal: safeguarding my physical integrity, protecting my life.

Maduro, just back from a visit to China, said on Wednesday that on a layover in Vancouver he received intelligence on what he said were "two highly serious provocations", which prompted him to scrap his UN trip.

"When I got into Vancouver I evaluated the intelligence which we received from several sources. I decided then and there to continue back to Caracas and drop the New York trip to protect a key goal: safeguarding my physical integrity, protecting my life," Maduro told local media.

One of the alleged provocations "had been planned against my physical integrity" and another could have involved violence in New York, the leading face of Latin America's left charged.

Venezuela is the region's closest ally of Communist Cuba which regularly has charged these conservatives were plotting against their leaders, leftist policies and governments.

Maduro earlier this month claimed the White House is plotting the "collapse" of his government next month by sabotaging food, electricity and fuel supplies.

Maduro's predecessor, the late Hugo Chavez, also made regular claims about several alleged US plots to kill him.

Venezuela expels three US diplomats over 'sabotage'

Venezuela has announced it is expelling three US diplomats, whom it accuses of plotting to sabotage the economy.

President Nicolas Maduro said the diplomats have 48 hours to leave the country, saying "Yankees, go home!"

Mr Maduro says he has evidence that the trio took part in a power-grid sabotage in September and had bribed Venezuelan companies to cut down production.

The United States and Venezuela have been without ambassadors in each other's capitals since 2010.

The diplomats expelled have been named as Kelly Keiderling - the charge d'affaires and the most senior US diplomat in Caracas - Elizabeth Hunderland and David Mutt.

Venezuela is facing a shortage of several goods, including toilet paper, sugar and flour.

The opposition blames Mr Maduro's left-wing policies and rhetoric for the crisis.

Mr Maduro made the announcement during an official ceremony at the city of Santa Ana.

""Out of Venezuela! Yankees go home! Enough of abuse against the dignity of a peace-loving nation," he said.

'New York plot'
Relations between the two countries have been bad for over a decade.

For years, the late President Hugo Chavez denounced "American imperialism" in Latin America.

In December 2010, Chavez denied a visa to the man appointed to be US ambassador to Caracas, Larry Palmer, over remarks he had made about involvement between the Venezuelan government and Colombian Farc rebels.

"Anyone who comes here as an ambassador has to show respect. This is a country that must be respected," Chavez at the time.

The US retaliated and expelled the Venezuelan ambassador to Washington.

Mr Maduro took office as interim president when Chavez was terminally ill with cancer. He was elected president in April, by a narrow margin, defeating opposition leader Henrique Capriles.

Mr Maduro's new Foreign Minister, Elias Jaua, met the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, during a regional summit in Guatemala in June.

They both said they were determined to improve relations, but the good will did not last long.

Last week, Mr Maduro cancelled his scheduled speech at the United Nations Assembly General, saying that his life would be in danger in New York.

Mr Maduro accused two former US officials of being behind the "provocations".

"The US government knows exactly that these people were behind a dangerous activity being plotted in New York," he said.

Having been to Venezuela, I can vouch that it is the west that makes their everyday lives a living hell, not the govt. The sanctions, restrictions, loopholes they have to go through are insane, and are creating a huge black market.

It was a PAIN IN THE ASS to find an ATM that would take my card (they only had 3 citibanks/intl banks in Caracas) and I had to go to some grimey swapmeet to exchange dollars. All this because the U.S wants to control their oil, and venezuela chose to make their resources national (rightfully so) and partner with OPEC on their own terms.

It's sort of crazy how the U.S will influence everyone around to block trade, and then turn back at the govt and say LOOK AT THE VILLAIN. its a bit like shytting in someones kitchen and then turning around and saying "look how shytty your kitchen is". That is pretty evil.

Caracas on Tuesday ordered the expulsion of US charge d'affaires Kelly Keiderling and two other diplomats [Reuters]
The United States has expelled three Venezuelan diplomats in response to their government's decision to order three US officials out of Venezuela.

The US government gave 48-hour deadline on Tuesday to Venezuelan charge d'affaires Calixto Ortega Rios, Second Secretary Monica Alejandra Sanchez Morales at the Washington embassy and Consul Marisol Gutierrez de Almeida at the Houston consulate, to leave the country.

The day that the government of President (Barack) Obama rectifies the situation we will establish new points of contact to discuss common issues

Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela's president

The move comes a day after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced the expulsion of US charge d'affaires Kelly Keiderling and two other diplomats, accusing them of conspiring with "the extreme right" to sabotage the South American country's economy and power grid.

US officials vigorously denied the allegation.

"It is regrettable that the Venezuelan government has again decided to expel US diplomatic officials based on groundless allegations, which require reciprocal action. It is counterproductive to the interests of both our countries," the US State Department said.

Maduro said earlier on Tuesday that socialist-led Venezuela would not have cordial relations with the US as long as its diplomats continued what he alleged were attempts to destabilise his country.

"The day that the government of President (Barack) Obama rectifies the situation, we will establish new points of contact to discuss common issues," said Maduro, the hand-picked successor to late President Hugo Chavez.

Expulsion motives

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the allegations were related to the US Embassy workers' travel to Bolivar state, which is home to troubled state-owned foundries and Venezuela's main hydroelectric plant.

"They were there conducting normal diplomatic engagement, as we've said in the past and should come as no surprise," Psaki said.

In a news conference in Caracas, Keiderling said she and the other diplomats would leave Venezuela on Wednesday.

She said that if the accusation against them was that they had met with Venezuelans then "it is true. We met with Venezuelans. If we aren't talking with these people, we aren't doing our jobs."

Expelled with Keiderling, the top embassy official in the absence of an ambassador, were consular officer David Moo and Elizabeth Hoffman, who works in the embassy's political section.

On Monday, Venezuelan state TV showed photographs and video of the three US diplomats in Bolivar and the neighbouring state of Amazonas, including making visits to offices of Sumate, which helped organise a failed 2004 recall vote against Chavez.

Threat to elections

Foreign Minister Elias Jaua accused them of working with Sumate on "the idea" of not recognising the results of 8 December elections for mayors and city councils.

Dashiell Lopez, a board member of Sumate, denied that members of the group had met with the expelled diplomats. He said in a phone interview on Tuesday that Sumate only lent its facilities for a meeting last week between the diplomats and religious groups.

Maduro has said a group of embassy officials that his government had been following for months was "dedicated to meeting with the Venezuelan extreme right, to financing it and feeding its actions to sabotage the electrical system and the Venezuela economy."

Venezuela's economy is increasingly struggling ahead of the 8 Decemeber elections. Annual inflation is at more than 45 percent and the government is running short of foreign currency.
