The unemployment rate for African-Americans is the lowest it's been during the Obama presidency, falling to 11.6 percent in April.

The latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Friday not only show a decrease of 0.8 percent in the black unemployment rate from March to April, they also show that this is the lowest unemployment rate for African-Americans in over five years.

The last time the jobless rate was this low was in November 2008, sitting at 11.5 percent. The next month, it rose to 12.1 percent and stayed high for the next five years, peaking at 16.9 percent in March 2010.

Unemployment among African-Americans, however, remains a major problem. Last month, more than 2.2 million African-Americans were unemployed, the highest rate of any racial group.

In April, the unemployment rate dropped for whites to 5.3 percent, Hispanics to 7.3 percent and Asians to 5.7 percent.

That means, too, that the unemployment rate for black Americans is more than double that of whites, which is not a new trend. A Pew studyfrom last year shows that since 1954, when the BLS consistently started recording unemployment by race, the rate for African-Americans has consistently been twice that of whites.

Good to hear; i'm curious to know if the 6.3% gap in employment between blacks and whites has increased or decreased in the same time frame. Who was hit harder and who recovered greater.

:wtf:

The only jobs available to black people are retail jobs?? Come on, man.

As a collective breh, I'm not talking about the few brothers who happened to work for Bank of America. The average black(especially recent grads) are just getting retail gigs/jobs that don't pay enough to support yourself.

Its good news but I only take it with a grain of salt. As it's been said, a lot of the jobs becoming available in this economy aren't jobs with sustainable pay, especially for a college grad coming out of school with loans and debt. I think a lot of grads are going to experience running into the "need work more experience" catch 22 now more than ever.

what about the blacks out here who have tech jobs, who went to law school and are now lawyers, and those with med degrees. are you saying they don't exist? :comeon:

we have to stop acting like shyt is dire out here for black people when it comes to employment. that is limited to those in the poorest neighborhoods who didn't get an education and don't have skills. that doesn't describe the average black man and woman.

Breh, your average black is not getting it in tech or law, sure you may have a few who have decent gigs, but the majority of blacks can be found at Wal Mart/Target/HomeDepot/etc. There's floods of HR's throwing out resumes with black names, not too mention there are a lack of black businesses to employ blacks.

Either way its all bullshyt.

White folks don't mind if Black folks have menial service jobs.

But when you start gaining jobs with power behind it in mass numbers, they'll be on some :whoa: shyt

You have a really depressing outlook that doesn't necessarily jibe with reality. Black women have the highest college enrollment in college this year.
