Ultra-Orthodox Jews rent Mets stadium for huge meeting on Internet dangers - The Washington Post
Ultra-Orthodox Jews who believe that the Internet threatens their way of life have rented the New York Mets’ stadium for an unprecedented gathering on how to use modern technology in a religiously appropriate way.

More than 40,000 ultra-Orthodox Jewish men plan to pack Citi Field for Sunday’s gathering on the dangers of the Internet, and organizers have also rented the nearby Arthur Ashe Stadium for the overflow crowd.

...
Television is banned or discouraged, but Kobre said many ultra-Orthodox Jews use the Internet either on computers or smartphones. “There’s a spectrum of usage and there’s a spectrum of how people are dealing with it,” he said.

Samuel Heilman, a professor of sociology at Queens College who has written widely about ultra-Orthodox Jews, said community leaders are worried about “seepage of the outside world into their enclaves.”

The Internet is NOT the Problem | Facebook

On Sunday, May 20th, 2012, thousands are expected to gather in Citi Field for a rally against the internet. Join our massive protest outside the stadium as we take advantage of this unprecedented gathering to deliver our message: Rabbis, stop protecting child molesters!

We are fed up with rabbinical leaders' dismissive attitude towards sexual and physical violence against children. The internet is not the biggest problem we face. Protecting children and bringing molesters to justice should be our number one priority.

We are ultra-Orthodox, Modern Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, secular, male, female, young and old. This is not an ideological issue. This is not an issue only for “insiders.” When it comes to the safety of our children, we must be united and unabashed in our actions

This is why the Internet asifa (the large-scale rally planned by haredim against the Internet scheduled for Sunday night at Citi Field) is important for K’lal Yisroel: because a wholesome lie is better than any broken truth; because denial must be protected at all costs; because ignorance is sacred in a world whose existence depends on it.

And this is why it is important that we be there too: because we hold the broken truth, the one we experienced firsthand when our rabbis, teachers, and leaders ripped their own lie piece by piece, life by life, in front of our eyes, and then intimidated, threatened, brutalized and suppressed any victim or witness who dared speak out, warning that they would destroy us and our broken truth if we did not accept their lie.

The Internet is an enormous threat to the ultra-Orthodox world for the same reason it is a threat in Syria, Iran and Russia; a population that is aware is a population difficult to control. They say that they must fight the Internet for it brings moral decay. What they do not say, even to themselves, is that they must fight the Internet so they can conceal moral decay. That the only thing they fear more than the outside corruption the Internet brought inside, is the inside corruption the Internet has revealed to the outside.

Be careful about people that say they do things for good or in the name of God.

A lot of people try and manipulate God or belief in God for their own filth.

they have a point, it does threaten their way of life and they have a right to congregate to figure out how to stop that. as long as they're not trying to get other people to do this, as they are not wont to do, what's the issue? yeah they dress funny and do weird things yadda yadda, but who cares?

it's a different issue from the child molestor thing, and that's straight up deplorable. of course they'd like to deal with him and others on their terms but their deal with the constitution doesn't extend that far, just like with the FLDS mormons.

The child molester thing ties in directly since the internet is not really new and I'm sure every religious institute has warned their people on the dangers of it.

The crescendo from the child molester accusations from that community has been rising for quite some time now in this city and this is a typical over-the-top move in an attempt to get things back under control.

hasidim are not "every religious institution", they literally want to keep their lifestyle as it was in poland centuries ago. their dislike of the internet makes perfect sense. i don't think this citi field seminar or whatever it is over the top at all. if it were in a synagogue, would that make it over the top? it seems to be matters of convenience related to addressing multiple congregations in one place that lead to imagery that makes people think it odd.

for the record, i think the campaign or what have you is bullshyt but it doesn't shock me.

your links to the child molestation seem speculative, that's all.

I've attended services at numerous churches over the years and without fail an extended internet speech has popped up.

Second, here in Brooklyn, things have been really heating up among these folks with the child abuse cases, the DA has been doing media rounds defending himself from accusations that he's been looking the other way for votes, and there's a pretty big rabbi case coming soon.

Going to be a hot summer.

i'm not saying other groups don't discuss the internet breh, that would be ludicrous. what i'm saying is that these folk deal with things differently than other groups.

i know about the abuse cases and it's horrifying. but please, i have yet to see you make a strong connection between the two.
