I actually never watched his version. Not to hate but going from Morgan to him didn't make me want to see it. Even though I liked him on Gone Girl

the character just didn't fit Tyler Perry's acting style or that he didn't bring the same level of gravitas and intensity that Freeman did.

Reading those books when I was young I always felt like the hope was for Will Smith to play that role if they made movies (Cross was described as a looking like a young Muhammad Ali). I couldn't believe Tyler Perry got the role.
