Two men arrested with an off-duty New York City police officer during what they thought was a $200,000 cocaine deal in Sunrise, but which turned out to be a sting, have been sentenced to federal prison.
Phillip LeRoy, who resigned from his job with the NYPD just before he pleaded guilty to a federal drug-trafficking conspiracy charge in March, is scheduled for sentencing June 5.
LeRoy, 28, of Queens faces between 10 years and life in federal prison, though his lawyer said he is hoping for a lesser punishment.
Espinal told investigators he was a drug courier and asked his pal LeRoy to accompany him from New York to Sunrise to pick up cocaine in Sunrise. Quintanilla, a clothing and car salesman from Ecuador, said he only got involved in setting up the deal, with an undercover contact, to try to pay off a debt he owed in Ecuador.
The three had no idea the proposed drug deal was a sting operation.

LeRoy, who was once named his Queens precinct's "Cop of the Year," brought his law enforcement badge and his loaded off-duty 9 mm pistol with him and acted as the security guard for the deal, authorities said.
Espinal is still facing unrelated state drug charges in New York. He was arrested in Brooklyn in 2013 with an estimated $1 million worth of cocaine and marijuana, according to New York newspaper reports.
