People voted for a fictional Trump they made up in their heads and the question is whether the massive propaganda apparatus behind him can maintain that fiction while he does all the things many of his voters told themselves he wouldn’t do

People will be disappointed, just like Brexit-Voters. Voting just out of contempt, uninformed, with illusionary expectations.

Surprised faces are about to get eaten.

Eric Columbus @ericcolumbus.bsky.social
Some voted for a fictional Trump they made up, some voted for him because the cruelty was the point, and some voted for him because he pledged to bring down prices and fix the border. Without the third bucket he would have lost.
6/35
hravishran.bsky.social @hravishran.bsky.social
I think the third bucket is really just the first. A Trump that is able to bring down prices is a fiction they made up.

Mike Demenchuk @mikechuk21.bsky.social
Also Biden already (grudgingly) fixed the border after inadvisedly assuring everyone nothing was wrong for about two years. So what *real* mandate does Trump actually have? He doesn't seem interested in lowering prices, just smiting his enemies and putting his boot on anyone vaguely foreign.
8/35
hravishran.bsky.social @hravishran.bsky.social
Trump admin 1.0 accomplished exactly one thing, which was to lower taxes on the rich. Why would 2.0 be any different?
9/35
Mike Demenchuk @mikechuk21.bsky.social
Great point. Hopefully we won't get hundreds of thousands of excess deaths as a throw-in this time, but I'm not optimistic.

The other question I think is whether the economy stays good enough for ordinary people that they ignore all of that other stuff anyway and make the propaganda apparatus’ job easier

A Progressive Libertarian @tiggersdad.bsky.social
It is almost certain Trump is going to screw up the economy. Yesterday was just a taste of what’s to come.

We're about to find out who was lying to themselves about Trump and who was lying to themselves about their own values.

I mean, they made up the illusion years ago that he was a successful businessman so crafting another false narrative around Trump is not anything new.

Joe Biden has vetoed five U.N. ceasefire resolutions, sent a 15 month supply of 2000 pound bombs to the Zionist occupation, lied about beheaded babies and mass rapes on October 7 and Hamas being under Al Shifa hospital, and

He has also bombed Yemen and threatened to bomb Lebanon and Iran if they try to stop the Zionist occupation from committing atrocities like this

Missing link in this post is whether there will be any counter programming to the “massive propaganda apparatus behind him.” History will say no including the side lining of Waltz during the campaign and now AOCs defeat. The same AOC whose questioning of Michael Cohen lead to Trump’s civil cases.

Do you wear a N95 mask in public
21/35
DeeDee @deee-deee.bsky.social
Easy answer.
Do you wash your hands after using the bathroom or before you eat?
If not, you’re a reason why we should..
22/35
Jok Darfeeg @pargloss.bsky.social
Most liberals don’t wear a N95 mask in public because Joe Biden lied to them that they don’t need to if they’re vaccinated

Miss me with that BS..

I'm hopeful this doesn't just lead to a backlash in the midterms, but also flips the press a bit away from their current obsequious posture. They'll feel more adverstarial when it's clearer most people don't like the administration, instead of the story they're telling themselves now that most do.

The media literally buried his incompetent response to Covid as well as his attempt to use violence and other illegal methods to stay in power.
Until we get better news coverage, I'm not seeing a limit here.

No need for a propaganda apparatus. The problem is that he told everyone he was going to do these things. At rallies. In interviews. In posts on TS. By messaging through supporters - to the extent of nominating those who openly supported this.
The voters chose to not believe this on their own.

wpkirsch.bsky.social @wpkirsch.bsky.social
Don't forget an unknown percentage of these people voted for the REAL Trump but don't want to admit they like the racism, misogyny and kicking down so they claim they voted for something else.

It’s astonishing that he still receives 20% to 30% support for these ridiculous ideas. That’s really scary. Very scary.

They must have. In his last rallies before the election, he sounded shockingly sad and low-energy for a guy whose supposed brand was all about strength and toughness. I was genuinely surprised at how bad he looked and sounded.
