Trump Says High-Speed Rail Isn’t Needed Because ‘You Take an Airplane – It Costs You $2’

President Donald Trump said his administration will investigate a high-speed rail project in California that, if completed, would connect San Francisco and Los Angeles with several stops along the way. Trump said a railway project isn’t necessary because, according to him, a plane ticket can be purchased for $2.

The president took questions in the Oval Office while signing a new string of executive orders. One reporter asked about the havoc being caused by Elon Musk at various government agencies after Trump appointed him to lead the “Department of Government Efficiency.”

“On Elon Musk, how often are you talking to him?” the reporter asked. “And have there been ideas that he has brought to you that you’ve said, ‘Oh no, wait a minute, this is going a little too far’?”

Trump replied that his billionaire donor has “done a great job” and slammed the United States Agency for International Development, which distributes tens of billions in foreign aid each year. In his answer, Trump pivoted to California’s rail project.

“And one of the things I want to investigate rapidly – because I’ve never seen anything to this extent – the train that’s being built between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is the worst managed project I think I’ve ever seen,” Trump said. “And I’ve seen some of the worst.”

The president went on to allege that high-speed rail would be a less efficient and more expensive alternative than air travel, which in his estimation, costs $2.

“We’re gonna start a big investigation on that because it’s– I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said. “Nobody’s ever seen anything like it. Nobody has ever seen anything like it. The worst overruns that there have ever been in the history of our country. And it wasn’t even necessary. I would have said, you don’t buy it. You take an airplane – it costs you $2. It costs you nothing. You take an airplane. But this got started. And if you have to, you drive, you can drive.”

Trump and Musk are aligned in opposing the Golden State’s rail project. Last decade Musk claimed he would build a “Hyperloop” to quickly ferry people across the state. However, Musk was never serious about the idea, which he floated to try to kill the proposed railway.

Trump wants to halt the high-speed rail project that would cut travel time between SF and LA from 9 hours to under 3 hours.

"We're going to start a big investigation on that.. it wasn't even necessary, I would have said, you don't buy it. You take an airplane.”

We covered this important, potentially precedent setting high-speed rial project last year:

[Quoted tweet]
NEW: High-speed rail is coming to the United States soon.

Construction just began on the first high-speed rail line, which will connect LA and Las Vegas and reach 200mph.

And it’s being built by 11,000 union workers.

To the various idiots on this thread ...

If you had passed High School English, you'd remember that this is known as a figure of speech, and in this case Trump is employing, for rhetorical effect, the figure of speech known as hyperbole. Don't hurt yourself trying to pronounce it.

He actually altered the hyperbole to its more common form immediately after saying the $2 ... to "nothing".

He's saying that it costs "nothing" (or $2 means "next to nothing") to fly compared to whatever Biden had been doing, the cost overruns ... but we don't have the full context.

Yet another pathetic Leftist attempt to liken Trump to Biden when there's absolutely no comparison. Biden would be rambling about "ya know, the thing" by now.

I'm not a Trump supporter (voted write-in) but this is absurdly pathetic.

Donald Trump Wants Bullet Trains in America: 'Doesn't Make Sense'

Donald Trump lamented that the U.S. doesn't have bullet trains—despite taking actions to hinder high-speed rail development as president.

Trump praised Japan's high-speed passenger trains during a live audio conversation with Elon Musk on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday.

Speaking about bullet trains, Trump said: "They go unbelievably fast, unbelievably comfortable with no problems, and we don't have anything like that in this country. Not even close. And it doesn't make sense that we don't, doesn't make sense."

In recent years, the U.S. has begun planning and investing in a number of high-speed rail projects in various places, including California.

In 2019, the Trump administration canceled a $929 million grant to California's high-speed rail project that had been allocated by the Obama administration.

Trump described the project, which had been beset by ongoing delays and mounting costs, as a "disaster." President Joe Biden restored the revoked grant in 2021.

Trump's comments were met with a mixed reaction on social media.

British political commentator Piers Morgan wrote on X: "Listening to @elonmusk & @realDonaldTrump chat about trains just now was surprisingly fascinating. Love this @XSpaces conversation.. it's like two mates chewing the fat about the world's problems."

Meanwhile, HuffPost reporter Igor Bobic pointed out that Trump was responsible for previously derailing California's high-speed rail funding.

Newsweek contacted Trump's presidential campaign for comment via email outside of regular working hours.

Japan's Shinkansen, commonly known as bullet trains, form a high-speed rail network capable of reaching speeds up to 199 mph.

In comparison, the fastest U.S. passenger trains, like the current Acela, are designed to speeds up to 150 mph on certain sections.

Two high-speed rail projects in the U.S. have seen progress this year after years of stagnation.

Construction on the 125 mph Brightline West, which plans to connect the Los Angeles area with Las Vegas, broke ground in April. And the new generation of Amtrak Acela trains, which are planned to travel between Boston and Washington, D.C., began testing in January.

Ray LaHood, who served as the transportation secretary under President Barack Obama, previously told Newsweek that a second Trump presidency could be "the death knell for high-speed rail" in the country.

He noted some Republicans do support high-speed rail but are generally more skeptical "because it's an idea that was started by Obama and Biden," and "they'd rather invest in roads and bridges."

LaHood previously said that he believed a historic lack of investment is the reason the U.S. doesn't have a high-speed rail network comparable to those of Japan, western Europe and China.

With one of those trains in Japan we could get from the east coast to the west coast in less than 20 hours…but they’re useless. Europe uses trains heavily and you can go from country to country like nothing

Fat fukk said a plane ticket is $2 :russ: looking at Delta, flying from Michigan to say LA or NY is at least $450 for me. Not everyone has millions to throw around like you

Trump is trash and all you MAGATS on here need to run into traffic today

Musk knows how many Teslas are sold in Cali. The high speed rail would hurt his pockets. Car and oil companies have been holding back alternative transportation and fuel for decades.
It’s too late for that. Tesla sales are crashing in California and European countries. Liberals are’t gonna support unhinged neo Nazi.
