'Civil War is too woke': Trump's anti-DEI crusade comes for Arlington National Cemetery

Critics on social media expressed disbelief over the Trump administration's latest attack on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives — scrubbing Arlington National Cemetery of information about notable Black, Hispanic and female service members, and topics including the Civil War from its website.

A cemetery spokesperson confirmed to The Washington Post on Friday that it took out internal links that sent users to pages listing “Notable Graves” of Black, Hispanic and female veterans.

The biography of Gen. Colin Powell, the youngest and first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who is buried in the cemetery, was among the documents removed. Also impacted: Hector Santa Anna, a World War II bomber pilot, members of the Tuskegee Airmen, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black American to sit on the high court, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

To boot, the cemetery "completely removed educational materials on the Civil War and Medal of Honor recipients, among other topics," according to the Post.

A spokesperson for the cemetery told the Post they are "proud of our educational content and programming and working diligently to return removed content to ensure alignment with Department of Defense instruction 5400.17 and Executive Orders issued by the President."

“We remain committed to sharing the stories of military service and sacrifice to the nation with transparency and professionalism, while continuing to engage with our community in a manner that reflects our core values," the statement said.

The Trump administration's move sparked fierce backlash on social media.

"Riddle me this: How do you not mention the Civil War at of all places Arlington National Cemetery?" questioned Michael Li, senior counsel of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU's School of Law.

"'Topics such as the Civil War' are why Arlington National Cemetery exists," wrote Gillian Brockell, former staff writer at The Washington Post. "Tomorrow they’ll tell us a very nice man named Robert E. Lee just up and decided to give his plantation to the government to bury soldiers on, out of the goodness of his heart."

She added: "PS Miss me with your 'we used to have decorum' s--- when Abe Lincoln said bury these dead kids in the mfs backyard."

"Arlington National Cemetery has removed information on Black, Hispanic, and female veterans to comply with Trump’s anti-DEI orders. They are literally trying to erase us," lamented Democratic strategist Keith Boykin on Bluesky.

"lol when even the Civil War is too woke," chided Niko Bowie, a law professor at Harvard Law School.

"Arlington National Cemetery just erased DEI from its website—because Republicans threw a tantrum over honoring ALL who served. The same GOP that cuts Veteran healthcare now decides who’s worthy of remembrance. This isn’t patriotism. It’s whitewashing history," rebuked the progressive veterans group VoteVets.

"Politicizing Arlington National Cemetery. Feel like it would've been a scandal if a Democrat had done it," remarked Josh Zembik, former communications director for Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT).

Do or DEI: Trump's assault on diversity divides America

Do or DEI: Trump's assault on diversity divides America

Republican enmity to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is premised on the suspicion that the people it rewards do not merit their success, while also depriving more deserving candidates from opportunities because they are not in a minority. (AFP)

For Trump critics, however, it is a frontal assault on civil rights that will chill efforts to create a fairer country, dismantling decades of affirmative action that they argue led to a more skilled, representative workforce.

Trump repeatedly previewed his plan to stamp out diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) during his election campaign, but the breakneck pace of the changes -- and the extent of their reach -- has caught many off guard.

Since his return to office last week, administration officials have been racing to prosecute Trump's war on DEI across the federal bureaucracy -- dismantling training initiatives, scrapping grants and sidelining hundreds of workers.

https://www.rawstory.com/raw-investigates/j6-committee/"Woke is not inevitable. It is not invincible. It is not indestructible. The counter-revolution is coming," anti-DEI crusader Christopher Rufo wrote on X in a post marking Trump's first week in office.

The evil of DEI is an article of faith in Trump's "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement, but the Republican leader is banking on growing skepticism in the broader public over cultural liberalism in government, education and business.

The enmity is premised on the suspicion that people employed through DEI do not merit their success, and are depriving more deserving candidates who are denied opportunity because they are not in a minority.

DEI came to the fore during mass protests against the 2020 murder of African American George Floyd by a white police officer, as institutions scrambled to signal that they were on-message when it came to racism.

Rufo was celebrating after websites and social media accounts related to diversity went dark last week, while officials directed agencies to close their DEI offices and place staffers on paid leave, in advance of being laid off.

Federal workers have also been ordered to report colleagues who hide DEI efforts with "coded or imprecise language," and the State Department is freezing passport applications with "X" designated as the gender instead of "M" or "F."

Among the casualties of the new regime was Coast Guard Commandant Linda Fagan, the first woman to lead a branch of the US military, who was fired after being accused of an "excessive focus" on DEI.

There were further ructions in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which was accused of quietly changing the job title of its "chief diversity officer" to "senior executive" in a bid to save her job.

In the corporate world, top brands from Target and Walmart to Meta, Harley-Davidson and Jack Daniel's have taken similar measures since Trump's election as they face pressure from conservatives to roll back DEI efforts.

In education, Trump has instructed federal officials to investigate DEI programs at schools with endowments of more than $1 billion -- which includes Harvard, Stanford, Yale and dozens of other institutions.

Although DEI hate didn't start with Trump, he made it a popular applause line at campaign events, vowing to purge the military of generals he accused of being overly focused on social justice, and planning a crackdown on transgender recruitment.

Liberals argue that diversity and inclusion policies -- such as a 2022 FBI recruitment drive at historically black universities -- help ensure the best and brightest rise to the top when they might otherwise be denied the opportunity.

"DEI programs, of course, do not do what Trump imagines," Elie Mystal, bestselling author of "Allow Me to Retort: A Black Guy's Guide to the Constitution," said in a commentary for progressive magazine The Nation.

"If anything, the country is beset by mediocre white men who got their positions through an old-boys' network of family, friends, connections, and frat buddies who now gum up and dumb down the system at every level."

New round of 'DEI' cuts had 'nothing to do with' DEI: report

New round of 'DEI' cuts had 'nothing to do with' DEI: report

A new report shows federal workplace safety regulators ordered the destruction of several guides that mention diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that President Donald Trump's administration has opposed.

Investigative reporter Judd Legum exposed the change Monday, highlighting that while the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guides use the words "diverse," they aren't within the context of DEI initiatives.

The books appeared to be targeted with a keyword search — and an indiscriminate ax.

"For example," he wrote on Bluesky, "one of the purged publications is 'OSHA Best Practices for Protecting EMS Responders During Treatment and Transport of Victims of Hazardous Substance Releases.' On page 94, the words 'diversity' and 'diverse' are used in a context that has nothing to do with race or gender."

"The publication notes there is a 'diversity of state-specific certification, training, and regulatory requirements' for 'EMS agencies' and 'diverse conditions under which EMS responders could work,'" he explained, with a screen capture.

Another guide he cited is "Guidelines for Nursing Homes: Ergonomics for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders." On Page 10, it suggests work-related musculoskeletal disorders could "be related to genetic causes, gender, age, and other factors." The use of the word "gender" triggered the book to be purged because DEI addresses gender disparities in hiring practices, as Forbes described.

Of the 18 publications the Trump team ordered to be purged, just one dealt with topics the Trump administration may find objectionable: "Restroom Access for Transgender Workers, Best Practices."

See the full list of publications and details here.

Colleges cut ties with The PhD Project, a nonprofit targeted by Trump administration over DEI

Until recently, it was a little-known program to help Black and Latino students pursue business degrees.
But in January, conservative strategist Christopher Rufo flagged the program known as The PhD Project in social media posts that caught the attention of Republican politicians. The program is now at the center of a Trump administration campaign to root out diversity, equity and inclusion programs in higher education.

The U.S. Education Department last week said it was investigating dozens of universities for alleged racial discrimination, citing ties to the nonprofit organization. That followed a warning a month earlier that schools could lose federal money over “race-based preferences” in admissions, scholarships or any aspect of student life.
The investigations left some school leaders startled and confused, wondering what prompted the inquiries. Many scrambled to distance themselves from The PhD Project, which has aimed to help diversify the business world and higher education faculty.
The rollout of the investigations highlights the climate of fear and uncertainty in higher education, which President Donald Trump’s administration has begun policing for policies that run afoul of his agenda even as he moves to dismantle the Education Department.

The Trump administration asked colleges to explain ties to The PhD Project

There is a range of nonprofits that work to help minority groups advance in higher education but The PhD Project was not well known before Rufo began posting on X about its work with colleges, said Jonathan Fansmith, senior vice president of government relations at the American Council on Education, an association of college presidents.
“It’s not hard to draw some lines between that incident and why 45 institutions that were partners with The PhD Project are getting this investigation announced,” he said.
The 45 colleges under investigation for ties to the organization include public universities such as Arizona State, Ohio State and the University of California, Berkeley, along with private schools like Yale, Cornell, Duke and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Education Department sent letters to the universities informing them its Office for Civil Rights had received a complaint and they were under investigation for allegedly discriminating against students on the basis of race or ethnicity because of a past affiliation with The PhD Project. The letters set a March 31 deadline for information about their relationship with the nonprofit.

In a statement, the PhD Project said it aims to “create a broader talent pipeline” of business leaders. “This year, we have opened our membership application to anyone who shares that vision,” it said

You have to be a sick and hollow person to find such zeal in trying to derail a whole group of people that has done you no wrong.

America is not coming back from this, even if the Dems retake government
Petty, unacceptable and immature behavior coming from a president of the US. He’s taking all these measures against black american citizens because black folks voted the least for him. It’s obvious that with the exception of c00ns, bothsiders and contrarians, most Black folks never rocked with trump after all these years and despite three elections. He sees everyone against him ( so most black people in this country ) as opps, and he's using his second term as president to plot his revenge, surrounded and helped by notorious racists like
VP J.D Vance, Elon musk, Russell vought and Stephen miller.

His revenge tour against people that don’t like him is on and underway.
