One of the most successful fighter-trainer combinations of the 21st century is no more.

Former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin parted ways with longtime trainer Abel Sanchez on Wednesday in a dispute over money. Golovkin, who has a fight against Steve Rolls on June 8 in New York, lavished Sanchez with praise in a statement announcing the change.

Golovkin did not identify his new trainer.

In a statement provided to Yahoo Sports, Sanchez referenced “an insulting trainer compensation schedule,” that Golovkin offered him.

Golovkin hired Sanchez in April 2010 to train him. In their first fight together, Golovkin knocked out Milton Núñez in the first round on Aug. 14, 2010, on the way to becoming one of the biggest stars in boxing.

They worked together for 22 fights, going 20-1-1 with 19 knockouts together. Sanchez transformed Golovkin from a boxer with a European style into one of the most exciting knockout punchers in the world. Their partnership provided success for both men and lifted them to the heights of boxing.

As is often the case in boxing, though, money is at the root of the problem.

Golovkin, who earlier this year signed a massive financial deal with DAZN that Sanchez said is worth $100 million, wanted Sanchez to take a pay cut. Sanchez wasn’t willing to take the cut and they parted ways.

Golovkin’s statement read:

“I would like to announce that I have made a major decision for myself and for my career. I want to build on what I have already achieved and continue to better myself. Therefore, I will not be training with Abel Sanchez. This was not an easy decision for me and it is not a reflection on Abel's professional abilities. He is a great trainer, a loyal trainer, and a Hall of Fame trainer.

“I will be announcing my new trainer at a later date. But today, I want to thank Abel for the lessons he taught me in boxing.”

Abel Sanchez blasts ‘greedy’ GGG
Sanchez clearly was unhappy with the way the partnership ended. He attended a news conference in Los Angeles to announce Golovkin’s deal with DAZN, at which point Golovkin told Yahoo Sports that he anticipated Sanchez would remain as his trainer.

Sanchez, though, did not appear at either stop on Golovkin’s New York-Los Angeles media appearances to promote the fight with Rolls.

Sanchez’s statement in full:

“FYI, as of today I will no longer be working with Gennady Golovkin. After a great 9-year run, records set and equaled, developing a Hall of Fame career and making it possible to sign a six-fight, $100 million contract with DAZN, he proposed and insisted on an insulting new trainer compensation schedule. My dignity and honor does not allow me to be screwed like that. It’s unfortunate being greedy, being ungrateful and no ethics, honor or integrity will end this relationship.”

Abel is out his mind if he thought he would get a percentage of that signing.
He is a trainer, they usually get a flat fee up to a certain point.
The fact that he is trying to act like he is the sole reason GGG is a champ, shows Abel let his ego go to his head.
fukk his racist ass.

Sanchez thought he was going get a piece of that $100 million
I don't see GGG implementing any new tactics at this stage of his career so might as well get John David Jackson or somebody from Kahkistan

Right. It's not like Sanchez is going to be developing any new strength and conditioning techniques at this point, they've done camp 22 times, in many respects, GGG doesn't need his input anymore.

He should holla at Anatoly Lomachenko, he could certainly use some new stimulus/training methodology/regime at this point in his career. Kazakh/Ukrainian relations have always been pretty positive for the most part.

Yea I find this outrage kind of weird. People use to always talk about how GGG had no defense or couldn't adjust in the Canelo and Jacobs fights but they mad the trainer behind that got fired? :dead:

Yeah that's a good point, if somethings broke, then fix it. His was broken (slightly, could have been another draw) so he wants to fix it.:manny:

He got out boxed in those fights, who said he didn't have defense, he couldn't adjust because of his IQ, no trainer is going to fix that, he is who he is at this point
Also Triple G wouldn't listen to Abel's instructions in the last fight lmao, he wanted to press Canelo and he wouldn't do it, probably because he was scared of getting KO'd, and Abel said in a interview he wouldn't go forward like he wanted and it probably hurt his ego

Abel did however get Triple G to the point he is now, and got played

It don't matter what trainer triple G gets he going to be the same triple G,

Yes and no, that last fight he won the majority of the last 6-8 rounds, i wouldn't say he was 'outboxed' so to speak because he came back strong in that second fight, but you're right in there was some murmurings/discontent from that fight that lingers between the two.

that's your opinion not a fact, Canelo clearly beat him, only reason GGG had success was because Canelo was trying to knock him out, the first fight was a easily boxing lesson for Canelo to me, exposed a lot of casuals, he easily out boxed GGG landed the bigger shots, and GGG only won the rounds Canelo took off because he was tired which were the middle rounds

That's the problem with GGG, the media hype got me delusional, because his dikk riders are just as delusional always making excuses for this guy

He lost to Danny Jacobs flat out, he lost, and got a gift, its only down hill for here, changing trainers at the end of your career never goes well

Aight cool, you saying i'm a casual though? Man i'm in the boxing gym 4 times a week, i watch all the fights, always have. From your post count it looks like you on laptop more than the bag, rope and ring? What is wrong with you? Canelo didn't clearly beat him to the extent that it was a white wash, he won the fight, and it was a great fight, but you reaching saying he clearly beat him.

You really hate GGG? Who cares? It's a sport, shyt, Canelo is cool, GGG is cool, nobody is caping for anybody, they just enjoying this lovely fights. Just view the boxing for what it is, two elite athletes going at it? GGG has definitely had his profile ballooned disproportionately to who he's actually beaten, whooped a lot of bums no doubt, that ill agree with.
