You never really know who will end up being sampled on an OVO album. On Drizzy’s latest project More Life, there’s one sample — in particular — that really sticks out from the bunch. While artists like R. Kelly and Lionel Richie lent their past records to the release, G-Unit’s Tony Yayo also found his way onto the very first song on the album.

“Free Smoke,” which was produced by Boi-1da, contains a sample of Tony Yayo and Danny Brown’s 2010 track “Roll Up.” Before anyone outside of Detroit knew who Danny Brown was, the G-Unit rapper saw raw talent in the undiscovered star. The song was featured on their collaborative mixtape, Hawaiian Snow.

During a recent visit to VIBE with his young cohorts, Chris Miles and Young Dooey, Tony opened up about the exact moment he found out Drake wanted his song for More Life.

“I got the call from the [lawyers],” Tony says with a laugh. “Then I got the call from the big guy, Paul Rosenberg. Shout out to Shady records. Then I got the call from Fif. I was surprised, you know when one of the biggest artists in the game wants to use something from your mixtape, it’s cool. It was an honor. Drake is a monster out here right now.”

Stay tuned for more from VIBE’s interview with Tony Yayo, Chris Miles and Young Dooey.

Danny just got out of Jail and Yayo was letting him sleep on his couch
Yayo always been a real one, and have a good ear for beats and for scooping up new talent... worked with max b, French Montana, Danny brown, and several other artists. He could've been g-unit a&r, but 50 never let him do it... g-unit would be on a whole other level if he was doing this part

I mean it's not like Danny Brown is a superstar now he's still just a hipster darling, 50's biggest fukk up was J Cole.

The Hybrid was cool; 2DopeBoyz was hyping it, but most of his fans came from XXX
