BoxingScene caught up with top rated and ageless #10 WBC heavyweight contender Tony Thompson, coming off his recent TKO victory over gold medalist Odlanier Solis in Turkey this past February:
Boxing Scene: Congratulations on your second victory over Solis. Any plans for your next bout?
TT: I want Deontay Wilder. I respect the fact that he's picked up the WBC title but let's see what he does against someone that can take his punch and hit back. Look at his resume and look at mine, it's not even close. I'd be 45-0 with 45KO's if I fought his level of competition my whole career. I guarantee one thing, if we fight he will take a nice nap in the ring before ever hearing a final bell.
Boxing Scene: If you do get the fight with Wilder, how do you see the bout playing out?
TT: If you want to know how our fight would go all you have to do is watch the video of me and David Price. The fight would look exactly the same, except David Price is technically a much better boxer than Wilder and punches just as hard. I already beat a gold medalist (Solis) twice and a bronze medalist (Price) twice, so when I beat Wilder who's a bronze medalist, you know I'll have to beat him a second time in the rematch (laughs).
Boxing Scene: If you don't get Wilder, what is your plan B?
TT: Man, I've got so many options right now that I don't know. Maybe Povetkin if he beats Perez? Manuel Charr is out there and rated. And there is a nice green piece of low hanging fruit sitting right there in the UK, my home away from home, Anthony Joshua. If I can't take the bronze from Wilder, I'll take another gold from Joshua. Either way, my lawyer and agent Mike [Borao] is just a phone call away if any of these fools want some.
Boxing Scene: Any closing thoughts?
TT: Just thank you to all the boxing fans for their support. One thing you know about Tony Thompson is that I will continue fighting the best, but what I really want to do is win a world title on the Premiere Boxing Champions series on network TV so I can go ahead and sell some grills or something!
