Golovkin's manager Tom Loeffler reveals what he sees in his fighter's future when he looks into his crystal ball.
In an interview with the Sweet Science's Michael Woods, Tom Loeffler mapped out a clear path for his fighter, Gennady Golovkin. He believes Cotto is sitting out the rest of the year to wait for a May fight with Canelo Alvarez. Loeffler then sees his fighter getting the winner.
Referring to the fact that there were no serious negotiations for a Cotto-GGG fight this year, Loeffler explained, "It seems like [Cotto's people] want to wait for the Canelo fight and not take any risks before that. I can't blame them, that's a big pay-per-view fight."
Woods also spoke with Cotto's trainer Freddie Roach who said he wants to see Cotto KO Canelo and then put a stop to the GGG hype train.
There's a lot of speculation going on around here, but it certainly is exciting to even consider this potential turn of events. First, we have to assume GGG gets past Marco Antonio Rubio on October 18th—this is probably the smallest leap to make. Then, we have to assume a Cotto-Canelo fight can be made. Early indications are good. Then we have to assume Cotto wins that fight AND that he decides to face GGG next. Sure, this scenario is possible, but in boxing sometimes it's hard to predict what happens tomorrow.
"You can't tell with Cotto," continued Loeffler, referring to the feeling many have that Cotto wants no part of the Kazakh destroyer. "He has to beat Canelo. Roach says Cotto will fight Golovkin, but who knows when the time really comes?"
Loeffler is generally a straight-forward guy, but he could just be generating some buzz ahead of GGG's ho-hum fight in October. Or do you think his crystal ball is accurate?
