Tobacco Industry Loses in International Courts Today
By Mike Bloomberg - MAY. 04, 2016
Statement by Michael R. Bloomberg In Response to EU Court Ruling Upholding Tobacco Control Laws & India’s Supreme Court Rulings to Require Health Warnings on Cigarette Packs:
Today’s court rulings in India and the European Union upholding smart tobacco policies will help save millions of lives and help young people avoid picking up smoking in the first place. I applaud all the officials and advocates who stood up to the tobacco industry and supported these laws, as well as the courts that wisely upheld them. This is an important victory that will encourage other countries to take similar actions.
About the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use:
The tobacco epidemic is killing more than six million people every year. If left unchecked, tobacco use will kill more than one billion people this century. The Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use is a $600 million initiative, working to implement proven tobacco control policies around the world. The initiative supports prevention policies and works to increase awareness of the dangers of tobacco use. In 2015, Bloomberg and Bill Gates launched the Anti-Tobacco Litigation fund to combat the tobacco industry’s use of international trade agreements to threaten and prevent countries from passing strong tobacco-control laws.
