My shooting is hit or miss; I have days when I'm doing well and others when I blow. Anyone got tips on how to be a better sharpshooter? I don't know if I have to work my release, timing, shooting form or how I hold the ball.

It's all in your legs breh. I can shoot jumpers 2 feet behind the arc without jumping. Just because I practice the right bounce in my knees/ legs

"The lower body is the most important. The upper body is kinda like non-existent if your lower body is doing what it’s supposed to do—the upper body just feels like your flicking your wrist. That really comes into play. If you got great legs on your shot, you never have to worry about missing—it’s always going to have a shot to go in." - Ray Allen

So how could I pull that off? If I tried that my shot would look awkward.

if you learn how to get your left hand da fukk out of the way but keep it steady and not let it really influence the shot TOO much you will be sinkin em everyday. let your right arm and hand do the work

and jump nikka JUMP

not with your feet, with your legs

its bout timing really
release at the ball at the right time dont rush to get that shyt in the air

when i learned these it went splash everytime

makes me want to start playin again

^ that's basically the key. there's a certain upward movement in your legs you need to have.

again, the best example would be Ray Allen. next time you watch him shoot focus on his legs & the way he bends his knees. takes a while to get it down but one you have it the rest falls into place.

you know what the funny thing is? Ray Ray was my favorite player growing up and I emulated him as best I could.

now at 26 even though I only play casually and I can't dribble or defend for shyt, I still drill them from WAY behind the arc. that bounce in my legs/ knees I worked at desperately as a 7th grader never left me

i also spent a lot of time trying to copy Jason Williams so i can still throw those crazy no look passes. i'll barely be able to dribble up the court, then i'll toss a crazy alley oop pass and the defender is just like :dwillhuh:

The approach

"You have to see the basket and take a power dribble. The approach isn't always the same. Sometimes you can't take that power dribble. Sometimes you catch it and shoot it. The one consistency is having your head up and being ready to shoot. A lot of times how you start a shot affects how you finish it."

The setup

"I grab the ball across the threads. Sometimes not, but that's typical for how I want to shoot the ball. I don't need my feet set. Here my knees are bent and everything is how it should be, but not always. What's always the same is from the time when the ball is set and I release it. That never changes."

The jump

"Here it's just the power and it's straight up. From one position to the next, you notice it's straight up. And I'm always in a phone booth. I'm not leaning either way when I'm shooting. Sometimes you take fadeaways and sometimes you get forward, but the precision shot is always in a phone booth."

The release

"When I'm shooting the ball, I don't look at the basket. I see the hole, a big hole as I like to think, and you put it up there. Most times I don't look at the rim or anything else. In game time, when you aim, you miss. Most guys who can't shoot, they aim. Trust your shot."

The follow-through

"You follow through at the basket always and it's got to be pure. You can't flick. There's no flick in it, just one smooth motion. You keep looking at the basket, or rather the hole, and then you find the ball. I watch how it goes in or hits the rim so I know what to correct next time if I miss."

Once I did the bolded, my jumper started being more consistent. When you push your arm, your wrist should flick automatically.

If you really need help though with form/mechanics, I guess:

That guy was MJ's, Ray Allen's, Kobe's, and Gilbert Arena's shooting coach for awhile. Also he just recently started working with John Wall before the USA scrimmage, and a lot of players have commented on how much his shooting improved.

On that website, for $200 a year he'll let you send in video of yourself shooting a basketball once every 3 months and contact you about what you're doing wrong/right. That's a steal if you're serious about improving, since you're getting advice personally from someone who's worked with the some of the greatest NBA shooters/scorers past and present.
