The much-anticipated welterweight title fight between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, which was in talks for December and seemingly took forever to consummate, isn’t going to happen on March 12.

Thurman, the WBA champion, was involved in a car accident and suffered a neck injury. The 147-bout is officially postponed, it was announced Monday evening. The fight was set to headline Premier Boxing Champions’ first prime-time show on CBS and was the most highly regarded matchup on the calendar.

“It’s very disappointing that the main event has to be postponed and that the CBS show is not going to go on,” Lou DiBella, who was promoting the fight, told USA TODAY Sports. “But thank god Keith is OK. The injury was really sustained from the air bag deploying. It gave him whiplash, He’s going to take a few weeks without boxing activity and physical therapy but he’s going to be fine. Things happen.”

It’s possible there will be still be a show on March 12 at Mohegan Sun as planned. The co-feature between Abner Mares and Fernando Montiel would headline a Showtime-televised tripleheader, with a WBC featherweight title defense by Gary Russell Jr. against Patrick Hyland also on the show.

A light heavyweight bout between punchers Edwin Rodriguez and Thomas Williams would round out the tripleheader, but logistics need to be worked out between DiBella, the venue and Showtime before any decision is made.

It’s a bitter pill for boxing fans, who have clamored for the matchup since Porter dominated Adrien Broner in June. That remains Porter’s last performance, and he has been training on and off for Thurman while he waited on an official date. He’ll once again be in a holding pattern.

Thurman, 27, fought twice in 2015, wins over Robert Guerrero and Luis Collazo. The Clearwater, Fla., native is a big puncher, and with his charisma and unique look, an impressive victory over Porter could catapult him to the next level.

For now, though, that opportunity will have to wait.
