Arizona boy, 3, shoots himself in the face with meth granny's gun: cops
Darrien Nez, 3, of Yuma shot himself after he found a 9mm pistol in the backpack of his grandmother, Rachel Spry. She now faces charges of manslaughter, misconduct involving weapons, possession of dangerous drugs.
An Arizona toddler died after accidentally shooting himself in the face with his 35-year-old grandma's hand gun, police said.
Darrien Nez, who was just 3 years old, picked Rachel Spry's 9mm pistol out of her backpack before firing it at his Yuma home at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday morning.
YumaSun.com reports that the tragedy struck as Spry was staying at the home to help her daughter pack for a move.
Sorting clothes in the bathroom, she noticed Nez come in but didn't see him take her bag which she'd left on top of the dryer.
Court records reveal she heard the gun go off five minutes later. When she looked over, she saw her grandson lying on the floor and bleeding from the nose.
Cops arrived to find Nez seriously injured. He later died in the hospital. Spry confessed she'd used meth at 11 p.m. the previous night and that she had a pipe in her backpack.
She was arrested and faces charges of manslaughter, misconduct involving weapons, possession of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Booked into Yuma County Detention Center, she appeared in court Thursday.
Justice of the Peace Greg Stewart told her the possible charges had been downgraded to reckless manslaughter per domestic violence, possession and/or use of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession or use of a weapon in a drug offense.
A bond of $500,000 was also set.
