Three young boys broke into a Czech Republic zoo and kicked and stoned to a flamingo to death, according to The Washington Post. The 16-year-old bird was a father of eight children, and had been transported to Jihlava Zoo after surviving a deadly 2002 flood in Prague.

“First, they pelted them with stones and then one of them kicked it,” resident zoologist Jan Vašák told The Prague Morning.

The boys, ages 5, 6 and 8, reportedly scaled a wall to get to the indoor zoo exhibit and attacked the flock of 60 pink birds. A second flamingo received serious — but not life-threatening — injuries. The rest of the flock was left “terribly frightened” and suffers from “severe stress shock,” a zookeeper told The Post.

A technician heard the attack and identified the boys, who he said refused to be questioned and appeared to show no remorse. Because they're so young, the kids won't face charges but their parents could be responsible for up to $2,000 in damages to the zoo. But a zoo release quoted by The Postpointed out: “The price of a breeding piece also coming from wild nature is incalculable."

This is the latest in a string of vicious attacks on zoo animals. Last week, poachers broke into a French zoo to steal a white rhinoceros horn. And earlier this year, a crocodile in a Tunisian zoo was stoned to death by a group of tourists.
