I'm guessing all those presidents were drafted. Now that we're seeing post-draft presidents I'd be more surprised if a president was in the military
Guessing???

George H. W. Bush enlisted voluntarily.
John Kerry enlisted voluntarily.
Ronald Reagan enlisted voluntarily.
Jimmy Carter enrolled in the US Naval Academy voluntarily.

Obama destroyed quite a few leaders with no military experience. What does that say?
He relies on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Every president is not a jack of all trades. Every president has advisors who are subject matter experts in different fields, military, economy, foreign relations, etc. Bill Clinton did not have any military experience either, but a lot of military actions occurred during his presidency under the direction of military advisors.

I much prefer how it was in the old days when the people making decisions about going to war had either already been in war or would fight alongside their military.

If you think about it, George Washington was totally cray. He was a general and on the field with soldiers, not in a fort miles away from the action. Big balls.
