Lawyers don't work for free . . why would his lawyer be writing letters unless he wants to keep that belt
http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/mayweather-wbo-deadline-passes-with-no-action-from-champ-293508For undisputed pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather, he may be going into his next fight with a little less gold around his waist. The World Boxing Organization had given Mayweather until June 1st to announce his intentions regarding the welterweight championship, a deadline that has come and gone with no action from Floyd.
“the Championship Committee will consider the petition on behalf of Mayweather,” a WBO executive said of the passed deadline. No date has been set for the meeting of the Championship Committee.
The deadline was first made public after an attorney for Floyd Mayweather, John R. Hornewer, wrote a letter on May 20th to the WBO expressing concern over the Bradley vs. Vargas fight being billed as for the “vacant WBO Welterweight” title.
“For Mr. Mayweather to pick up the paper and read that another promotional company has announced that it is staging a bout for the same WBO title that Mr. Mayweather won in the ring, currently holds and has not relinquished, was extremely disappointing to him and his team.” Horner stated in his letter.
The WBO immediately responded with two letters (from WBO Championship Committee Chairman Luis Batista Salas and WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, both dated on May 22nd. In the letter from Mr. Salas the WBO requested Mayweather “ascertain in writing on or before Monday, June 1 2015” Mayweather’s intention to keep the WBO belt by complying with the requirements in accordance with the WBO regulations of World Championship Contests. In particular to “send a check in the amount of Two Hundred Thousand Dollars ($200,000) corresponding to the sanctioning fee pertaining to the WBO/WBA/WBC Unified Welterweight bout held in Las Vegas, NV on May 2nd, 2015.” (in accordance with Section 16(a)(3)). Also, Mr. Salas requested that Mayweather send a signed letter “relinquishing his WBA/WBC 154 lb. title and stating his wish to keep his 147 WBO title.” (In accordance with Section 15(b)). Although the WBO is seen as favoring unification bouts, the rules do prohibit a fighter from holding belts from multiple weight classes at the same time.
President Valcarcel also expressed a desire to receive some clarification from Mayweather, citing a reliance from the WBO over Mayweather’s much publicized claim during the post fight press conference on May 2nd that he would relinquish all of his titles and allow other boxers to vie for them.
