you're not gonna be able to do much with that gateway. I would say reuse the case, but it probably has crappy airflow

you have to figure out what your budget is. I'd say you're looking at around $500+. although you can do it for less (@$300), I think if you're gonna invest in pc gaming, you should aim for something more than 'slightly better than consoles'

someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think your motherboard won't support the newer graphics cards. I think you're better off just building a new computer.

Or you could buy a new motherboard and fit a graphics card in there. I'm not sure if it would physically fit.

it would support newer graphics cards, but it probably won't support a new cpu (lga 1155) or ddr3 memory (2 things you would need for modern gaming)

HP ENVY h8-1409 Desktop Computer (Intel Core i7-3770 / 1TB HDD / 10GB RAM / Windows 8) : Desktop Computers - Future Shop

He can build a better computer for less money. His current computer may be okay for light gaming. Add a modest card and psu to get your feet wet first. Then if you found out its your thing. Build a new pc and reuse the card and psu on the new build.

Make sure your video card is good above anything else. An i7 will play anything and barely blink. Its the graphics card memory that will make your games seem like they are sluggish.

I'm open for buying a new desktop. its bout that time anyway. I'll just give mine to my moms.

what's a good off the shelf gaming pc? im lazy.

i got about $500 to play with (maybe more)

$500 is very tight for a pre-built gaming pc .For 500 I would go with a AMD A8 PC.

Try saving up until you have about $800 or so.

Contrary to what most people in here are saying, you don't need i7. The difference between i7 and i5 is negligible. Just get this as an i5.
Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 BX80623I52500K

If you're on a tight budget, this is probably a pretty solid video card for you:
Newegg.com - HIS H675F1GD Radeon HD 6750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

This case is pretty legit as far as air efficiency and price goes: Newegg.com - Antec Three Hundred Illusion Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

We're already up to 380. Add in the power supply at around 600-700Wattage of power and we're around $500. You can then get a motherboard and 8GB of DDR3 for around 200-250ish. You can take your old hard drive and optic drive (CD-ROM/DVD/Blu-Ray player) and throw it in this machine to complete it.

$800 is about right for setting yourself up for a nice beast-mode gaming PC that will be straight for AT LEAST the next couple of years. Worst case scenario, you make a small $100-150 investment down the road to upgrade your video card and maybe add more RAM.

Honestly though, $500 is getting to the point where you're gaming on a PC that's already bottlenecked by it's hardware and struggling to run a lot of current games at Medium settings. If you wait til you got about $700-800, you can run a lot of games now on High, no sweat, and you can continue to not have to worry about falling behind for at least another calendar year.

Hope this helps man. PM me if you need some more info.

Edit: If you're looking for a pre-built machine, sorry man. I've always just built PCs and I'm not very knowledgable regarding the current market for price and capability of current desktops for gaming. :yeshrug:

$500 will net you an excellent PC that can play games. If you can spare more I would recommend a Touch Screen Desktop with Windows 8.

BTW an i5 will do a fine job for gaming. I personally use an i5 paired with a GTX 680, and needless to say me gaming experiences are top notch. For good gaming, the bulk of the money should be spent on the video card. Get the best one you can afford.

And make sure you build, don't buy prebuilt overpriced garbage. Building a PC is easy as long as you do proper research beforehand.

Just cop a dope video card and throw it in your current pc. After that you can buy a new motherboard and processor as you see fit down the line but still play games now on medium settings. Watch out to make sure your power supply can support your graphics card.

For $400 can get you a GTX 670 and a new power supply. Sure your graphics card will be bottlenecked by your processor but if you save up $300 more dollars you can finish off an upgrade and be good.
