There's such a thing as dvd-rw so why didn't dvd recorders become more popular?

The only reason to have a dvd recorder was to duplicate a movie or game. What I'm wondering about is why was it never used like how we used vhs tapes. To record live tv?

Well now that I think of it, I guess mainstream media didn't push for this because everything would get bootlegged like how it is now on the internet. I could record something like a series and then not need a box set.

Am I right or are there other factors???

I'm more interested in why you even brought up the question. :patrice:
Digital is the wave. Gamepass is king. La nube took us to the promised land :blessed:
Why does physical media....COPYING physical media no less....even matter? :wtb:

DVD recorders came too late into the game. Anyone who wanted to rip a viewable copy of anything just threw the file on a hard drive and kept it moving. Everyone would rather enjoy the experience and ease of streaming video and audio content. People are far less inclined to go through the extra steps involved with physical media...even if those steps are miniscule.

They put a bunch of hoops in front of recording to DVDs. Before, those VHS sets had an IN and OUT coax, which you could use the VHS deck to capture that stream in between.
Those types of setups didnt exist as much with DVD from what I recall. They were straight up OUT sets.
I think it could mainly be attributed to the fact that when DVD sets started to become cheaper in price, the movie industry learned form the VHS era and pushed for designs which would reduce stream capture.

Dumb question? No, you explained why your justification for physical on console is stupid  and ppl was not putting large ass video files on hdds and then what, watch on their PC?
These reasons below is what I remember...

Write speed to slow
With this being the biggest factor.

Blank DVDs were used for more than just watching movies. They were used as a form of media or file storage just like flash drives and external hard dives. They were great for storing pro tool sessions back in the day.

they were too expensive
got a toshiba recorder at $200 in 2007 compared to buying a panasonic vhs recorder in 2002 for $50
i think DVR (tivo) kicked dvd recorders ass
i used my recorder to transfer my homemade pornos from miniDV to DVD as well as some VHS but other than that, i didn't use it much. I prefer non-linear editing. Also many tv stations started to put their content online so i would just save it from youtube or dailymotion.
if all dvd players could record to disc and were cheap then it might had a chance.

you could use dvd-r and record multiple times but to play it on another player you had to finalize it so dvd-rw wasn't realy needed since blanks were so cheap.

You must be hella young. I worked for one and watched multiple other companies make millions off of the DVD ripping/copying freeware technology.

Things got hot after the DMCA was signed but it was a major commercial and residential industry for several years in the early 2000s.
