The Weeknd on Going From Indie R&B Enigma to the Pacesetting Prince of Pop
Really hoping Abel goes back to his roots on the next album
At just 26 years old, Tesfaye has moved the collective needle toward his own velvety version of pop. New albums from solo singers like Zayn and Nick Jonas are as indebted to The Weeknd as Tesfaye is to Jackson, so much so that when Zayn’s debuted this spring, Beauty Behind the Madness jumped back up to number eight on iTunes. Others are tapping into his magic, too: So far this year, The Weeknd has featured on Rihanna’s song “Woo,” Kanye West’s “FML,” and “6 Inch,” a track on Beyoncé’s press-stopping visual album Lemonade. “Right now, the radio is peppered with hints of production elements and vocal stylings that were very likely inspired by The Weeknd,” Swift says. “In our industry, that’s the surest sign you’re doing something right.” (The Weeknd purists will be pleased to hear that he’s in the studio with the House of Balloons team again. “But it’s a new thing,” Tesfaye assures me. “Always a new thing.”)
