Saw it today in theaters. Probably the most I've enjoyed a Sorkin project since The Social Network (before I did a fact check on that). Of course this plays very freely with the actual facts too (as is Sorkin's way) but for the most part it is accurate enough, although Sorkin somehow in his efforts to also focus on the racial aspect of Bobby Seale's part in the trial he also diminishes it. For instance, while the bounding and gagging of Bobby Seale is presented as a pivotal part in the trial it reduces this event to a single occurence when Seale was in fact bound and gagged for multiple days. And the image of the latter would be much stronger than what the film presents. There's also the weak point of the actor playing Fred Hampton, a role that is relatively small so it's baffling they couldn't have just gotten a better look-a-like with the same (or better) acting skills since this actor was such a non-presence. Regardless, it's a good film with strong performances all around and due to recent events it might actually be more relevant now than when Spielberg was still attached in the late 00s.

Sorkin to me needs someone like Fincher to reign in his indulgences as a writer and avoid that schmaltzy lib bullshyt that you get in trash like The Newsroom.

No confidence in him as a director.

This film has been linked to a million different directors over the years....i know Spielberg was involved, and Paul Greengrass I think. Those were more appealing to me than Sorkin.

Also few actors make my skin crawl more than Eddie Redmayne. I still ain't forgot the Michael Keaton robbery

Oh yeah, Sorkin adds nothing as a director. Although he doesn't bring the film down someone else could've made it more impactful.

And lol. You know Keaton is in this too, right?

Na
America is really in denial at how evil it’s been

Kind of ashamed that me seeing this on a movie is the first I’ve seen of all this

What was your issue with the ending? :jbhmm:

Also, Sorkin-lite is a good thing since he's unbearable when he overwrites shyt.

The reading names/slow clap/info cards combo was rough. Looney judge banging his gavel for like 10 minutes and shyt lol

I prefer him overwriting. It's what I "buy the ticket" for.

Entertaining and had the typical strong Sorkin dialogue

I'm reading more about the real life event though and it seems like Sorkin sanitized it and tried to make it more of a liberal centrist "let's fix the system" type of movie rather than the more radical leftist "let's burn the whole thing down" belief that the Chicago 7 actually represented. I think Sorkin's one of the greatest screenwriters of all time but his weakness has always been that he has to inject his own personal beliefs and politics into his characters instead of just letting his characters stand on their own.

Also, that ending was cheesy as hell.

Overall though I'd say a 7.5/10 as the acting was great and I liked the pacing

Also fun but random fact. Their defense attorney William Kunstler had a cameo in Malcolm X as the judge that sentenced them. I'm wondering if he took inspiration from the a$$hole judge during the trial lol
