Thoughts on this flick? I got it in a bundle pack, but haven't seen it. Didn't see a topic here. It came out around the time of Saving Private Ryan, so it didn't get much talk.

It was a great war movie but it wasn't all that. It had a beautiful soundtrack, a strong cast, and some great cinematography but I didn't like the editing or the slow pace of the story from time to time.

It could have worked if they tightened it up a bit. The style/tone was difficult to sit through for three hours, even though I generally enjoyed it.

I don't think I'm gonna be able to finish this shyt. It's like one big, long episode of Pacific.

I think I'll take one ep of Pacific over this. I'm not shytting on Pacific because I enjoyed it. I'm just saying.

Just finished it. It's not complete trash by any means, but it's not good enough to hold your attention for 3 or however many hours long it was.

My problems with the film were:

1) The length. If your giving me a film this long, the standards need to be high. Give me some Das Boot/ Apocalypse Now/ Seven Samurai etc level stuff.

2) The narration. I don't share the belief that narration is necessarily bad. Lots of movies do this well, but here it's boring and trying to make the film seem deeper than it is, with lots of banal babbling enough good and evil.

3) Flashbacks to a missing wife/girlfriend. Can't stand this:russ:. To me this is up there with giant air vents as far as movie cliches are concerned. When some brooding loner is fantasizing about some woman we've never met and they give us these silent romantic flashbacks of them frolicking about on a bed or whatever, I never care, it adds nothing.

4) The whole thing feels kind of aimless. One of the reasons I struggled to get through it is seemed to just drag on with no particular point or target. Maybe that was the point, but it was still a chore.

It does have some well shot and tense battle scenes, but overalI it's pretty weak. Saving Private Ryan is leaps and bounds beyond this.
