Just finished it. It's not complete trash by any means, but it's not good enough to hold your attention for 3 or however many hours long it was.
My problems with the film were:
1) The length. If your giving me a film this long, the standards need to be high. Give me some Das Boot/ Apocalypse Now/ Seven Samurai etc level stuff.
2) The narration. I don't share the belief that narration is necessarily bad. Lots of movies do this well, but here it's boring and trying to make the film seem deeper than it is, with lots of banal babbling enough good and evil.
3) Flashbacks to a missing wife/girlfriend. Can't stand this
. To me this is up there with giant air vents as far as movie cliches are concerned. When some brooding loner is fantasizing about some woman we've never met and they give us these silent romantic flashbacks of them frolicking about on a bed or whatever, I never care, it adds nothing.
4) The whole thing feels kind of aimless. One of the reasons I struggled to get through it is seemed to just drag on with no particular point or target. Maybe that was the point, but it was still a chore.
It does have some well shot and tense battle scenes, but overalI it's pretty weak. Saving Private Ryan is leaps and bounds beyond this.
