SUPER TROOPERS Director Jay Chandrasekhar: We’re ‘Close’ To a Sequel

By Charles Webb on September 3, 2014
We might not have to wait too much longer for news about a Super Troopers sequel. That’s according to the first film’s director and star, Jay Chandrasekhar, who stopped by Pete Holmes’ You Made it Weird to talk about life, marriage, a tribute to the late, great Robin Williams, and what’s next for the Broken Lizard gang.

“We’re close to signing,” Chandrasekhar told host Pete Holmes during the August 27 podcast.

Chandrasekhar didn’t offer any concrete story details, but he promised Super Troopers 2 wouldn’t be too different from the 2001 film. “Well look, rather than make one where Joe Pesci comes in with blonde hair, we’re just going to do another one,” Chandrasekhar said. “The mustaches are going to be a little bigger, but basically, it’s going to be a really similar style movie.”

The last time we saw Thorny (Chandrasekhar) and the other member of the Vermont State Troopers, the boys were busting both highway and city crime after taking down the notorious Johnny Chimpo pot ring. The film was written by the Broken Lizard boys Chandrasekhar, Erik Stolhanske, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Kevin Heffernan.

In the years since then, Chandrasekhar has been directing features and TV including episodes of Community, and Chuck. His newest project, the semi-autobiographical marriage dramedy pilot Really, debuted last week on Amazon.

I revisited the first film recently and, mostly, it holds up. Maybe it feels a little looser than it did back in 2001, but the bits that work still land. One of those is the famous “meow” bit, a moment in the film that was born in a cramped hotel room during a marathon writing session months before shooting began. Also: that was real syrup.
