been rewatching boardwalk empire, and i can safely say it holds itself surprisingly well against the sopranos. it might not be a fair comparison, for while the both focused on organized crime, the sopranos is something of a black comedy, and boardwalk is more of a straight drama with comic moments.

the production of boardwalk is exquisite. it really feels set in a different era, an element many period dramas find difficult to capture. i’m only on season 1, but i love capone’s character. he’s the type of dude you have to be careful cracking jokes with. :pachaha:

I finally watched the Sopranos for the first time in 2020 at the height of the pandemic and was truly wondering what the hype was about…..

It was cool I guess but Boardwalk Empire had a way more interesting story and was more enjoyable to me.

There’s no way some people got the Sopranos as the number one tv show of all-time I think they trolling…..

The Sopranos is a highly overrated show.

Not even among TV shows of the last 20 years.
Just among HBO SHOWS of the last 20 years.

Game of Thrones was better, even with its decline in later seasons.
The Wire was better.
Deadwood was better, but unfortunately it was cancelled.
Rome was better, but unfortunately it was cancelled.

the sopranos pioneered what is now known as the prestige drama, a genre of television that transcended the common episodic format, presenting serials with a tone and production that was almost akin to film. compared to the best in its class, it might fall short, even appearing pedestrian, but it was captivatingly new at the time of its debut.

where did you copy/paste this from…way too concise, accurate and well-worded of a point to be yours?

Speaking of overrated shows and this is a unpopular opinion. I’m in the 5th and last season of Breaking Bad (first time seeing it) and I don’t see what all the hype was about. I’ve heard it was one of the best shows ever but it’s not even better than the first 4 seasons of walking dead (which are the best seasons of walking dead). By the 5th season of Breaking Bad, I’m annoyed by all the main characters. shyt kinda mid. The Wire is the best tv show I’ve ever watched.

The Wire :blessed:> Breaking Bad:unimpressed:

Wire is deffo better than BB....but Breaking Bad is great cause it flows so well Ep to Ep to the point that it's basically a long ass movie. And the cinematography as splendid. No scene is wasted and no characters feel unnecessary.

The Sopranos. I mean some odd decisions were made (that one season that focused way too much on AJ's bullshyt for example but also, delaying seasons for months or even YEARS due to whatever issues) however it remained a pretty solid show throughout. I didn't care for the ending but with the lead character dying IRL, I can appreciate it more now.

BWE was spectacular initially but seemed to lose direction pretty early on. It was one of those shows whose popularity seemed to somehow catch everyone involved by surprise so they started doing dumb shyt like killing off main characters for shock value. I mean yeah that sort of thing works in a vacuum, but not when you kill too many too quickly and for reasons that don't actually make sense within the narrative of the show. Michael Pitt for example got done dirty because he was in a feud with the showrunners and a menace on set, but his death practically kneecapped the show going forward.

After Pitt was killed off, Gretchen Mol's character and storyline with The Commodore was relegated to meaningless fluff side story meanwhile many day 1 viewers were eager to see the whole thing fleshed out in more than some tired flashbacks.
