I wish I knew the panel that composed this reading list, because off a glance alone, it skews heavy towards feminism, and that preface at the beginning makes me wonder who is the ideal target demographic for this

During Summer 2020 there was a big anti-racist push in academia and publishing. List seems to be targeted towards non Blacks.

What raised my eyebrow wasn't the feminist slant. Surprised me that so many living writers are listed. To me there are maybe 3 living writers that can be mentioned in the same breath as the iconic writers, poets, and playwrights.

thank you for the background behind this.

took another look at the list and i'm disgusted at VSB's Damon Young being included, but with a BLM memoir and the inclusion of Janet Mock, it does raise my brow about how they wish to present the concept of black liberation. Looks like they threw in Fanon and Brother Minister as a way of showing they're really about creating dialogue, even though the majority of the list is tame and safe.

I guess The Isis Papers and The Man-Not would be too much for this black liberation canon being created.

Who are those three?
By living writer, I mean a name that's not already solidified. Living older legends and those who have passed are in a rare category that very few newer writers will ever enter, in my opinion.

Off the top of the head, two writers who entered that conversation are Nathan McCall (Makes Me Wanna Holler) and Isabel Wilkerson (Warmth of Other Suns)
