The Marvel/Netflix shows are doing a fine job of bringing in great directors. In a recent live stream, Finn Jones was asked about the musical inspiration that influenced Iron Fist and revealed that Episode 6 of the upcoming Iron Fist Netflix series will be directed by legendary rapper and director RZA, following the list of episode names and directors that came out earlier this week.

So before I started the role, I actually made a playlist on my Ipod of songs that Danny Rand would listen to. It’s a lot of kind of 90’s hip-hop, like De La Soul, Jurassic 5, Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang Clan. Like that kind of music is what Danny’s really jamming to. And we feature that in the series. And actually one of our episodes was directed by the RZA himself. Episode 6. So yeah there’s a very close tie with hiphop and the Iron Fist series.

RZA is known to be a very big fan of martial arts films, having stated several times in his career his love for the genre. Finn spoke with a lot of praise for the director and his understanding of the martial arts genre. He made his feature film directorial debut with (the coincidentally titled) “The Man With The Iron Fists” in 2012, which he also wrote and starred in. The film was also the first theatrical film starring WWE champion Dave Bautista, who currently stars as Drax in this May’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The Iron Fist episode in particular that RZA has directed is titledImmortal Emerges From Cave, which we’re assuming is a nod to Danny Rand’s origin story. When asked about his experience working with the hiphop icon, Finn had this to say:

Oh he’s a dude. Really super chill. Has a really good vision of what he wants. And he really understands that genre, the martial arts genre.

This isn’t Marvel’s first connection with hip-hop royalty. Luke Cage was heavily influenced by hip-hop, with a soundtrack full of hip-hop classics and numerous performers making an appearance on the show. Another member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Method Man, made an appearance in one of the show’s episodes, trading hoodies with the hero.
